Dusk Over Ocean Beach
View of Ocean Beach from Sutro Park right after sunset.
I was out for a sunset stroll with my LX5 today.

Nice monochrome treatment, it looks like you have a head start on the rest of us on our "Strangers" project. :)
--Warren
Thanks Warren - is that our next project? Because I am about to bust wide open on that one. I am literally going to walk the beach and force myself to get as many photos of strangers that I can. I have been too nervous to ask and have terrible results now I am feeling supercharged with some new skills as if I just opened my camera for the first time. Very Exciting!
Carl, I was thinking of making the "Strangers Project" an ongoing project for our blog (instead of just one month). Not everyone will want to participate, and that's perfectly fine. I was hoping to have some discussion between the folks are interested in trying it so that we can write down some general guidelines for the FPCF version of a 'Strangers' project.

I like you use of the the toned image, makes for a more mysterious affect. The contrast with the high rise in the back is very effective Carl
Dan
I love it - great composition & beautiful tonalities.
Wow! That is a beautiful line!
Beautiful view, great B/W...:-)

So beautiful scenery at Pismo Beach. nice capture ! I really like
#2 picture that foreground of flowers, and #4 image... waves, birds and mist full of view...Awesome !
Lena,
The final one is spectacular! Surging energy but still the birds are so calm and at ease, like the easy flow of the mountainous horizon.

Wow, this is awesome!
Looks like Pismo Beach?
Thanks Steve :)
This is in Pacifica, CA, about 20 minutes south of SF. I took this while standing in the same position as my "Restless Sea" picture.

I like the mist that cloads the background, nice capture Warren. Is this at Linda Mar beach or Rockaway?
Dan
Thanks Dan. I was standing at the entrance to the Pacifica fishing pier. The pier was closed that day because of the high surf.

I like how you captured the water. The speed of the shot is interesting because you have some movement in the waves, but not every little water drop.
I am really intested in what the people are looking at and the guy in the red shirt...

Very dramatic! The splash in the front looks like the rock behind it. Nice light :)
Warren,
A nice composition from another perspective. Another warm day in the Bay Area.

You know that old hotrod saying: "There's no substitute for cubic inches". I think this applies to photography as well: "There's no substitute for sensor size".
The APS-C sensor on my ancient D100 is still really, really good. :)

Cool shot, the blasting waves haven't managed to touch these delicate towers yet.. Nice colours in the rocks too :)
Thanks for the comment, Lea, and also for stopping by here. --Warren

Great pic! A variety of rocks and green colour. Lovely! How did she cross back?? It looks deep.
Thanks Lea :).
Gail is actually standing at a spot on dry land near the edge of the stream. Yes, parts of it were deep.
--Warren
Too bad it was deep; looks like it would have been fun to hop around the rocks a bit. Hope you two made it out with dry feet!
Warren,
The angle of the shot gives me the impression that I am a child looking for my mommy and scared by the size of the rocks. Everything is so large. It is what a child would see.

Nice use of conflicting lines between the way the seal are laying and the line of the ocean. The ocean color offsetting the grey beach also really adds to the picture.

He looks very comfy!
Great shapes & shadows here, Warren.
Great use of Black and White. I don't think that the picture would be as good in color, nice choice. The quality of the picture shows very nicely the texture of the seal fur as compared to the sand. Like Steve said very nice use of the shadows.
For me the Seal looks to be saying "just let me sleep."

The dark foreground really works well here, drawing attention to the three people's head peaking into the horizon. And the rails lead you to look at them as well, and then of course up to the beautiful sky :)
Simple and wonderful. Wonderfully simple... you get the idea ;-)
Warren,
The focus of the clouds is brought on by the dark lower part of the picture. Was this planned? I really enjoy the clouds with all the shapes and colors. Thanks,
**Dolph
Dolph, it was planned to the extent that I liked the way it looked, and the it was partially dictated by the narrow dynamic range of digital sensors. It would have been challenging to get an even exposure even with film, and would probably have required a split ND filter, or a HDR technique, if I had wanted to even out the exposure. I personally do not like to use the HDR technique because I often like to work within the limitations of my gear and medium (I like the look).
I could have created a composite, but like you say, the attention to the clouds is accentuated by the lower part of the picture. The only things that I did was to adjust the levels in the lower part to show just enough detail to avoid having a dark blob on the bottom.

Beautiful sky clouds, nice composition, great in B/W...:-)
Lena,
Great daydreamy b&w.... the clouds and continuous waves, smooth sand that goes on an on, the infinite horizon.......
