View of SF from North Vista Point
We stopped at the north end of the GG Bridge to see the last of the parade of ships for Fleet Week. I haven't taken out the Lumix 20mm lens for a while, and I'm still amazed by the great IQ from this lens.

What a great composition! I like the sinuous coastline you used as a leading line to draw my eye into the photo.

The Perfect Line
The annual Giro Di San Francisco bike race was held yesterday (Labor Day) down near Levi's Plaza.
I had a chance to practice my action photography. It was a really hot day, and I took a few hundred pictures. I'll probably put an online album together, but I couldn't resist picking one from the bunch to show first.

Great anecdote about finding wildlife, hahah! Imagining you and Gail trying to pass on the trail behind them....
I love the brightness and warmth in the colors. Also, the tree looks so much like a bird itself. I thought it was an owl at first. Lovely story presented.. A return home.. - Lena said...

Excellent series actions catch of wildlife, shot shot...:-)

The wildlife photography scene is more than wild, excuse the pun. These guys are fanatics. Spent a day with them tracking wolves taking down a bison. Incredible how these photographers go about their day totally devoted to the one second shot hit or miss.

You Looking at Me?
I shot this robin at Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park. The wildlife viewing and scenery were fantastic at Yellowstone NP, and the scenery was great in all three parks (Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and Glacier) that we visited.
What has everyone else been up to lately?

Stow Lake Moment
I love the image "signature" of this lens, especially for B&W images.
Has anyone else paid attention to your lens signature? :)
Dan, for some reason, when you create a post on Blogger, I don't get a notification email. So I didn't know about your last few posts until I came onto the blog to upload my post.
Sorry for the delay, but I will comment on your excellent images very soon.

I forgot to mention that this lens, the Nikkor-H 50mm is from the 1960s. It was first introduced by Nikon in 1963. I got my copy of this lens for free (!) a couple of years ago. I couldn't believe my luck. The filter ring has a huge dent in it, but the glass is in excellent condition and everything else functions well. For this picture, I used it adapted to my Lunix G5.

Lea, I found an interesting article that talks about lens quality wherein it mentions 'lens signature'.

Dynamic Ocean Beach and Land's End
It was one of those amazing winter days a couple of weeks ago, in between the rain, when there was an almost perfect combination of sun, clouds, sand, surf, and reflections.
I must say that since I came back from our 2 month trip, I had an urge to do black and white pictures. I shot these two with the intention of making black and white images.
My previous session was with the D200, this time, I decided to take shoot the G5 with the spectacular 20mm f1.7 lens.
Which one do you like (and why)? I would love to know.

Warren, I like each equally. Your use of foreground highlights for me makes these images. They draw you into the image and bring you into the moment you captured. I find that often the foreground is not exploited and is often wasted space within the image, but these are beautiful in that they significantly contribute to the overall composition.

I like the first one for its abstract qualities. The clouds are full of daydreaming shapes, and the waves seem to have made a face there staring off to the left. It has a very timeless appeal.

Beautiful View. Amazing scene at Ocean Beach, nice composition, great B/W, excellent capture...:-)

I like both photos but the top one is my favorite. The tones are more even while still holding that complete black to light composition.
And now after Lea pointing it out. I see the face in the beach.
So now you have a face in a beautiful place. Cant beat that. =)

Fun Selfie
Part of the fun of playing on Facebook is to update profile pictures on a regular basis. The other day, I picked up my Lumix G5 w/20mm f1.7 combo for the first time in a couple of months, getting ready to take it out for a photo shoot.
I got this idea to take a picture in a picture using the swivel LCD screen on the G5, and my bathroom mirror.
I flipped the image horizontally so that what you see is not reversed in the mirror, and then converted it to black and white in Lightroom.
I'm going to post this as my latest profile picture on FB, and I thought I'd post it here as well.
In fact, I often cross-post my pictures to here, and elsewhere, but the difference is here, we can discuss our pictures in a photography related context.

We had a cat that decided to have her kittens in the walls of an old shed when I was about.. 7 or 8 years old.. They were super cute and we never got to pet them, it was terrible! ;) I'm impressed you got this close. They are pretty adorable, but recalling a lot of hissing noise.
Ooo and I used my E-shutter (didn't know that's its name) at a book launch last week. One more useful use of it...

BMW 3.5 CSL at Laguna Seca
And now for a change of pace... :)
Any BMW fans out there?
I shot this on Sat. 8/16 at the annual Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca Raceway. I practice my motorsports photography once a year at this event :). The BMW had just exited Turn 3 and was accelerating down the short straight to Turn 4.
This is a 1975 BMW 3.5 CSL that raced in the IMSA GTO Series of that era. It was one of four made for the IMSA GTO racing series. The engine is a naturally aspirated 6 cylinder, producing 440bhp at 8600rpm. (wow!) I really like the wild paint and outrageous spoilers, flares and generally bold appearance.
I have many more photos from Race Week that I may decide to post in the days to come.

Interesting lighting, it seems to be from both the top and bottom. Shadows & highlights much more interesting this way --his hair/forehead, and the top lip especially. Great portrait and addition to the long-running Strangers Project.

I once came across one of those signs that said "Post No Bills" and there was a picture of Bill Nye The Science Guy, a duck bill, Bill Clinton, and a few more I can't remember. Your photo of the sign here has the same humour ;) Nice find!

Excellent! He sure looks like a fine young man. I love that you gave him one of your glorious and beloved Soviet cameras! You may have hooked him on SovCams, though ;-)
FED-3 was my very first Soviet camera, so I have a soft spot for it. The Industar 61 is a fine lens, too. Looks like he has two lenses there - a "panda" I-61 and another one on the camera? Could the one that's mounted be a late-model Jupiter-8?? - Warren T. said...
-
Steve, he mounted the VC 35mm that he just bought from me onto the Fed. He didn't realize that I was also giving him the I-61 with the Fed body. :)

Silly, me, it's the Skopar Classic, not a Soviet lens - the construction and lettering is much too fine ;-)

Ghent, Belgium at Night
Taken: June 2013
I thought I'd kick off this month's project with one from the archives. This is a night scene taken in Ghent, Belgium one year ago.
There's nothing fancy here in terms of technique, I handheld the camera while bracing the camera on a railing on the bridge that we were standing on.
