View of SF from North Vista Point

Lumix G5, Lumix 20mm f1.7

We stopped at the north end of the GG Bridge to see the last of the parade of ships for Fleet Week. I haven't taken out the Lumix 20mm lens for a while, and I'm still amazed by the great IQ from this lens.

Misty Marin Hills & GG Bridge

Nikon D200, Nikkor 85mm f1.8D

On this day, I noticed the nicely shaded layers in the Marin Headlands, and I tried to incorporate that into a composition with the bridge.

I'm trying different compositions, which one do you prefer? And also please tell us why.

Don and Dolph are right of course. But I prefer the first one as having the dark foreground is a nice contrast to the mid and backgrounds. And having the foot of the first of the support structures is good as it is echoed in the second support as well.
The shape of the dark foreground echoes the shape of the hills in the background which is another nice touch.
Overall, I think the misty gradations that you have successfully captured are absolutely breathtaking.

I love the first one. That tall vertical space gives much to appreciate of the structure of the bridge, seeing its feet and limbs.. with room to breath at the top. I do like the second one for leaving that white space though... *imagining the birds*

The Timeless Look

Nikon D100, Tokina 17mm f3.5 ATX

Since there was nothing modern visible in the frame, I decided to do this one in black and white.

I thought the crude, rusty chains in the foreground contrast nicely with the elegance of the bridge.

Two By Two

Nikon D100, Tokina 17mm f3.5 ATX

Late afternoon, at the Crissy Field fishing pier, the tourists were taking their obligatory pictures in front of our city's iconic landmark.

It was time to dust off the D100 to give it some exercise. It still gives fantastic image quality, wouldn't you agree?

Bridge Shot

Lumix DMC-G5, Lumix 100-300mm

Lena's recent shots from this location inspired me to go out there this afternoon. I posted this exact angle before except that one was taken on slide film. This one here is with my latest gear. It was a beautiful day out there, but once  the sun went down, it got VERY COLD... I'll post more later.

I uploaded a large image so that you can examine the image quality from this equipment combination. (be sure to click on the image to see the original uploaded version).

Twilight View of San Francisco from the Marin Headlands

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 14-45mm

This is historic, my first stitched panorama shot!

This is a 7 shot stitched panorama. The shots were handheld. I used my EVF's grid line display to aid with positioning the horizon in each of the 7 shots. In post-processing, I am trying out a program called Autostitch. It was ridiculously easy to create the resulting image. Blogger has a 1600 pixel width limit on images, so unfortunately you won't be able to see all the details.

I also tried a 6 shot series in portrait mode that worked well, but this series was a more dramatic example.

I rarely tone my B&W images, but in this case I thought it was appropriate. I used a mild sepia tone, and I think it gives an aged feel to the scene which is appropriate for the Fort.

What do you think?

Marvelous composition. I like the way you used the big arch and the repeating, smaller arches below. The lighthouse makes a great focal point around which the arches live.

I do like the toning - I think it fits the scene well!

Blogger dan in marin said...

Warren as you have seen from past posts, I have utilized toning a great deal. In the dark room bleaching was one of my favorite post printing processes. Have you utilized yellow in the Nik Software much like a filter. I find it very effective and this image really benefited from the toning giving the nostalgic effect you may have been looking for.
