Road Trip Home - My July

We stopped to see friends along the way
I was able to get some Macro Photography in
SunFlowers are much cooler up close
I finally got a shot of a cow on the road.

Then they ran from me

I Photographed my best friends wedding

We met new friends

We took a side trip to a mountain before coming home. Because we felt like it.

I love the variety! The odd D shape of the sign; motion bursting through the lines and structure, audible red light; the starry eyed robot thinking of time is hilarious, daydreamer, "THE ROBOTS ARE COMING"; and pushing all colours to the side for the monochrome world on a grey day. Very entertaining Lettering post :)

Saturday with Warren Roll 1

Hey guys,
I met up with Warren and a couple other photography (/gear) enthusiasts in SF a couple weekends ago. I developed a roll of film from that day and here are some of the pictures.
I know this is the friendly photo forum but some friendly constructive criticism goes a long way :)

Nice smiles in #3, hi Gail and Warren ;)

I really like the relaxed body language in #6.

#9 is my fav. Just something wonderful about the energy, the tilt of the rooftop, hair blowing in the breeze; consumer of summer joy! :)

#10 is also great. I like the strangeness of tonalities of shadows and highlights.

Good shooting Keshav!

I like the eclectic mix of the day you added into your series. Makes for an interesting story to read through your pics. I also like that you are clearly relaxed when taking photos of strangers and meeting new people. An art form in itself.

My favorite has to be # 3 & # 8.

thanks for sharing

Veteran dogwalker

I often see this old guy walking his dog on my way back from work. I usually stop and talk with him and he tells me about the dogs and stuff. He told that he used to be in the Navy at some point.

I need some help with editing. I'd be very grateful if you could help me edit these down to the top 3 images. Let me know in the comments why you feel some images should be included and others not.
Thank you!

Kash, my picks

I like #3 because you want to know want is attracting their attention
#5, because he is pondering something while the dog is looking at you
#6, because the shadow on the half profile adds character

First of all, Keshav, what are their names? :)

My comments on this series:

#1 The man's face is mostly obscured by his hat and the harsh shadow. Not much going on the background.

#2 Much better from the lower camera position. The dog looks handsome. The man's face is still partially obscured, but the effect is not as bad as #1, because overall, his pose and head position draws attention to his dog. The dog is the main subject of this shot. This shot shows the man's feeling towards his dog. The lower camera angle also shows the trees in the background which happens to balance out the dark shadow on the left.

#3 Something or someone draws both their attention to the right, but the effect is a bit disconcerting because the portrait orientation does not really support the poses of the subjects. Even so, the composition is balanced.

#4 This one has a little whimsy and humor because it looks like his dog is staring at the man's shadow, but the disparate elements are not harmonious.

#5 I like the fact that the dog is looking straight at the camera here, and the man is in an interesting, contemplative pose, but again, taken as a whole, the composition does not flow well because of the relative positions of the subjects (not a flattering pose for either subject).

#6 I like the man's facial position. You can see his whole face. Perhaps you can lighten up the shadow on his face a bit in post-processing. You can see his whole face including a bit of his forehead for the first time in this series. I would crop off some of the left side to emphasize the man and the tree behind him. The tree would emphasize the man's strong character and cropping out some of the left would balance the man's gave to the right (his left). Instead of cropping, you could have composed this differently.

#7 This should have been a vertical composition. I don't think the background warrants a horizontal (landscape) orientation. You could have moved closer too, or you could have maintained this orientation and included something else in the background, like the road or more of the environment.

My picks are: #2, #3, and #6

Thanks for posting these here, and giving us some practice with critiques.

I would be also be interested to know which were your first 3 choices before you heard from us, and why.

Though, I must add that I found drawn to #5 because of the awkward composition and the thoughtfulness that came through on the man's face.

I would say 1, 5, and then 6 or 7 cropped a bit to get a little closer to him.

I think that combination shows their relationship and different poses. And your title suggests the man is more the main character of the story, so having a solo portrait of him is nice.

Victoria

I've been enjoying every walk in the city a lot more since this lettering project started. Keeping my eyes open for things like this.

Words are so important. And with imagery and photos, I sometimes forget that they are quite beautiful too.

Scale

Hagia Sofia, Istanbul, Turkey.
At first glance you might miss the girl taking a "selfie" in the arch. I also found the contrast between her human scale and the gigantic calligraphic panel quite striking.

Frankfurt Airport, Germany.
I had just got off a long flight from New York and had a longer flight to New Delhi to look forward to so I was eager to stretch my legs and check out my new camera so I started photographing strangers who were surprisingly obliging and unsuspecting. I had a great time and was lucky to get this portrait.

Puerto Rico, USA.
That's my dad inspecting the bottle of beer I had ordered with our meal. I think he was trying to figure out if real Trappist monks brewed the beer or not. Turns out it is. In case you are a beer aficionado - Rochefort Brewery.
6th Av. New York City.
This is the giant Robert Indiana Love sculpture on 6th Av. There's a constant line of tourists waiting to be clicked in front of it. If I had the patients, I would stand there for hours taking pictures of tourists as they carefully arranged themselves in from of the piece, each person changing the meaning and context of the four letter word.

Great choices for the Lettering project! I love the modern-ness of there being a selfie in the beautiful old architecture. And that sign is standing out like it's floating off the screen, hovering magically.. Trippy and surreal composition. o,O I like it!

Alex

Lumix G5, Lumix 20mm f1.7

This is Alex. I met him at the new San Francisco Leica Store. Alex is the gallery manager of the store, and his job is to line the brick walls that you see behind him in this picture, with selected works from Leica photographers. Alex is a photographer himself, but he has been too busy to shoot lately. He gets to use his choice of Leica gear from the store, lucky guy!  :)

Interesting lighting, it seems to be from both the top and bottom. Shadows & highlights much more interesting this way --his hair/forehead, and the top lip especially. Great portrait and addition to the long-running Strangers Project.
