Saturated Color

I found some of the slides I shot in a color photo class at City College in 2002. I shot this on Ektachrome 100 VS which is film that gives intense colors. I'm not crazy about the film as it doesn't render colors accurately. The slide looks really nice but is very difficult to scan and reproduce in a print.

Hi Martin,

Very nice use of lighting and fine composition, colors, etc.

I like it!

Beautiful colors, Martin! I also like how you can see the texture of the objects via the perfect lighting.

Final Portrait of Dad - July 2005

Nikon N50, Quantaray 28-80mm, Color Negative Film

I used the N50's built-in flash in Program mode for fill. I often take a camera with me when I take my dad out for walks at the park. This time, I was testing my newly acquired N50. I didn't know quite what to expect from the cheap Quantaray lens, but I'd say that the result is decent.

My father passed away 2 weeks after I took this picture. You can read his eulogy on my personal blog.

Hood Ornament - different take

Thanks for posting this, Benson! I was hoping to see your shots from the Concours. It's always very interesting to see a different take on a subject.

I like the red/white, diagonal striped background behind the ornament.

Sorry I haven't been commenting or posting, Kathleen and I have been touring the Southwest. Summer, one of the benefits (the only benefit) of being a teacher. Anyway, it will be hard to try and pick only a few to share but I will try to edit it down. Here is my first. Sunset over the Grand Canyon. Posted by Picasa

Tony!!! Hey, we all have a life outside of FPCF, so no need to apologize for not posting.

Don't limit the number of pictures that you post! Post as many as you want! We need more!

Something must have happened on the upload of this one. When I click on the picture, I don't get the full sized version. By the way, we're all using blogger's own picture upload feature now instead of Hello. It works well. Try it.

I'll wait until you post a bigger version before I comment on the picture.

Welcome back!

Tony, this is a nice shot. How about posting a bigger version? I was there in 1991, and I think I took a few shots from the same location.

At first glance I didn't think much of this, but as I looke a little longer, I like it. It is almost deconstructionist - breaking the object down to simple lines and curves.

I like that it contains only white and black really, and the white bleeds off the page breaking the usual rectangular shape of a picture.

I also lke the detail of the reflection of the logo; it has no identifiable shape but logically you know it comes from the DMC.

Hood Ornament Study

Nikon F4s, 85mm f1.8D, Ilford XP2 Super

This is the famous Pierce Arrow hood ornament. I brought two cameras to the Stanford Concours this year, my D100 and my F4s.

I find the head on shot a little hard to read. After the caption told me it was Pierce Arrow, I could make out the subject but didn't recognize it right away. Of course, maybe you want your audience to work a little. Did you grab any profiles of the ornament?

Good use of shallow depth of field.

Thanks for the comment.

Did you view the full sized version of the picture?

Here's my thinking behind this one:

Even though this was a Pierce Arrow hood ornament, the picture is not supposed to be a common illustration of a hood ornmanent. The point of view is that the viewer of the picture should feel like the target of the archer. And the viewer's eye should be drawn eventually to focus on the archer's eye (as in seeing eye to eye, hunter vs. hunted). But you only get this effect if you view the full sized version of the picture.

My New Environment at Redwood Shores

Nikon D100, Tokina 17mm

Hey folks, I shot this last Friday during lunchtime. This is a nice trail next to Bridge Parkway at Redwood Shores, right next to my new office.

The marshy area you see is Belmont Slough, and the buildings you see in the distance are the Oracle buildings.

A cat photo

This was available light with the color balance set for tungsten. There's a little noise as my camera was using ISO400.

Cute cat. Is he/she your cat? What's its name?

Noise was not too bad, the color worked out well.

This is a cat my brother brought home a few years ago. He doesn't have a name but my brother calls him Tony. Mom calls him "Gray cat". Thank God he's house broken!
