Up the Stockton Tunnel Stairs

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 20mm f1.7

It was a crisp summer day and as we walked up the stairs from the Stockton Street tunnel, I saw this combination of lines, shadows, blue sky and red banner.

Warren,

I can see all these people climb the steps each day. They probably don't see the colors, lines, and contrasts...maybe all of us should look up more often.

The combination of light, reflections, and shadows off of this downtown building caught my eye.

Thanks for the comments, Dolph & Lea. I thought that the reflections of the tower across the street (behind me)in the windows added an interesting depth to the image.

This photo was taken in Sao Tiago Hotel, Macau. It is composed of two shots. I do not recall the exposure settings which were the same for both shots. After I took the first shot, I panned 3/4 frame. Then take the second shot. I overlapped the two about 1/4 of frame, so a photo processing software can match up the two photos. Avoid wide angle range between 28mm and 35mm, the edge distortion makes the panorama look weird. Many photo processing software can stitch photos. This particular photo was stitched by a software came with my old Canon printer.

let's try this again...

ok, i uploaded a few shots the other day but they were a bit bigger than the ones posted here...i deleted them and want to give this another shot.
i shoot with a small complement of lenses (these days) and exclusively on a pair of rd1 cameras. in the past i only shot black & white but the colours from the rd1 have seduced me and much of what i shoot now stays in colour.
i welcome feedback and comments in general, generally.

Wow, really nice first post, Joe :) You're going to add a nice 'Street' dimension to the group, while Simon appears to have the panoramic style well in hand. Our November project should be right up your "alley" :P.

Blogger's search feature is broken so to compensate, I've been adding Labels to my posts so at least we can click on a label to see other related pictures.

Re the pictures:

#1 I'm left wondering where the utensils went. Nice form and lighting.

#2 It looks like you interrupted this guys' snack, he looks a bit annoyed.

#3 Looks spontaneous, nice catch

#4 I love the eye contact between the two subjects, really nice moment.

he was standing in the middle of a walk way, eating. i shot a few images of him and while this one has some camera shake, i prefer it to the others i took.
these 2 women work at the store they are in front of. they drew the outline for the jumping game and started to play...all the while i was shooting and they completely ignored me.
i call #4...and their eyes met.

Hi Everyone, I finally got my account setup. Sorry for the slow start! You may already notice I like the panoramic format. It can best capture wide view without distortion. This photo of SF was taken from Twin Peaks last November. It is composed of two shots (shutter speed 3 sec., Kodak ASA 400 film, Canon Rebel G).

New England Autumn

I went back to New England recently to visit my family. Here's a shot I got in Massachusetts. I think it was in the town of Littleton.

When I saw this picture, I thought of this song:

------------------------

Autumn Leaves by Johnny Mercer

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Here's a different view of the exotic Ferrari F40 at the Concorso Italiano (car show) at Laguna Seca Golf Course, taken last August. You can see the twin-turbo V8 engine in the rear window.

Porsche 917K at Laguna Seca

Panasonic DMC-G1, Micro-Nikkor 200mm f4

This is 1970 Porsche 917k arguably one of the greatest sports racing cars ever made, and also one of my personal favorites. I had the pleasure of seeing it race at the annual Monterey Historic Automobile Races last August.

This picture was taken from the observation tower at the track. At the time, I had not yet acquired the Lumix 45-200mm zoom, so I used my ancient, manual focus Micro-Nikkor 200mm f4. Fittingly, this lens is from the same era as the race car :)

I visited here during the summer and I remember the sand being so hot I had to wear my shoes (sad face). But this looks much cooler and,,, wet? Really dark. Curious as to whether it's post-processing or the rain? The lines are fun to follow :)

Beautiful Curves

Panasonic DMC-G1, Leitz 50mm f2.8 Elmar, Lumix 20mm f1.8

This is a gorgeous, well-preserved, mid-60's Toyota 2000GT. It is the first highly collectible Japanese car. When I was a kid, I would draw sports cars freehand, and somehow my drawings always end up looking like this car :). The compound curves of the bodywork and window glass made this car very expensive to produce, thus making it very expensive to buy. It cost $6800 in the mid-60's making it more expensive than contemporary Porsche and Jaguars. Just over 300 were produced and only 60 cars were imported into North America.

These pictures were taken at the Stanford Concours this year. I wanted to try my Leitz 50mm Elmar, but after taking 3 pictures, I decided that I did not have enough room at the Concours to work with the 50mm focal length. I switched to the Lumix 20mm for the rest of the pictures. One of the first 3 pictures was of this car. I went back later and snapped a couple more with the 20mm.

Blue Angels on 10/10/10

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 45-200mm

A United jumbo jet was part of the Fleet Week airshow yesterday. You don't normally see a giant passenger plane circling SF Bay with tight turns. My vantage point was just north of the Municipal Fishing Pier at Aquatic Park, about 1/8 of the way up the hill towards Ft. Mason. The Lumix 45-200mm was just "okay" for shooting the action. AF was not always accurate, and I haven't figured out how to efficiently use the lens in MF or continuous focus mode yet. I still managed to get some decent shots though.

Notice the crowds of people viewing the show on the roof of Alcatraz.

A seagull races the Blue Angels during the final fly-by :).

Very cool, love these shots. My fav is the one with one flipped upside down. You can really see the scale/size of plan since you can also see the pilots! Also enjoyed the one with them over Alcatraz. Again, the people make it a very interesting shot to me :)

Harvest Moon, 9/22/2010

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 45-200mm

I read an article that day that there was going to be a spectacular harvest moon that evening, so I rushed home, and Gail and I went up to Twin Peaks to see the moon rise over the east just before the sun set into the west. As it turned out, the sunset was a bit more spectacular than the moonrise. I think we arrived a bit too late because by the time we parked the car, the moon was already well over the horizon. I was hoping to catch it right at the horizon where it would appear larger. Also there was a lot of haze and heavy atmosphere that day, so the air was not very clear for a moon shot.

Salmon Run, Ketchikan, Alaska

Lumix DMC-GF1, Lumix 14-45mm

When we first came to Ketchikan many years ago (I think it was in the mid-90's), I was shooting film and I brought my Nikon F4s. As I recall, it was an overcast day, and even though there were just as many fish back then in Ketchikan creek, the light was not as good as this time. I have great memories of seeing all the salmon for the first time, and I was really looking forward to seeing them again this time. I was not disappointed.

On this day, it was sunny and warm, and I saw thousands of salmon converging at the mouth of the creek, going from a wide inlet to a narrow creek about to make their final swim up the creek. They were all lit well by the sunlight and clear blue skies.
