Emeryville Sunset

Lumix G5, Lumix 45-200mm

I haven't posted a sunset in a long time. Here's one from last December, shot from Emeryville, with a view of the SF skyline.

Great photo. I love how sky is split by the sun as if it is tearing it or maybe even zipping the last rays together tucking SF in before saying goodnight.

FOG? OR HUMIDITY? FLORIDA IS THE ANSWER

Nikon D7000 ISO100 f/9 200 Tokina 11-16mm @ 14mm

Well I wish I could find the email I was trying to read on my phone in between coffee refills. I know the September project was FOG and I thought i read something about not cropping the photo. But I cant seem to find it.

So here is my hopefully not last attempt at Florida Fog.

I saw this split in the sunset between the patches of rain clouds and beautiful, relentless, Florida Sun. Seems my lens sitting in supercharged office AC all day had a hard time clearing up as I started to focus.

Since my first Fog shot was happening with or without my will it seams it was destined to land here.

Ocean Beach Sunset

Lumix DMC-G5, Lumix 100-300mm

I was out there last night too! I decided to go out because it has been raining so much lately, and I thought the lingering clouds would look good around sunset time. I was near the Balboa Street side of Ocean Beach. It was too cold and windy, so I only stayed a few minutes.

It's a really beautiful sihouette - I like the way the bulk of the hills contrasts with the delicacy of the brush in the foreground - you caught the light on the water just right to do that effectively :-)

Dandelion Studies

Lumix LX5

We went for a walk at the reservoir in our neighborhood around sunset time. I turned around to look at the setting sun, and I saw some dandelions glowing from the sunset light, so I decided to try out the close focusing capability of the LX5. I took the four shots below.

Which one do you like best, and why?

I am with Joe, the bottom one defines the subject and has the best range of colors. #3 the focus might be a tad soft, #2 the subject is a bit too close to gain a perspective of the subject, and #1 the contrast is too much taking away from the subject. Nice camera Warren.

I'll take #3 because it tells me a story. The bottom is too focused and #1 and #2 the light is intense. I agree with Dan that #3 is soft, but it leads me to the story of the one trying to over come lawn mowers and the masses to survive. The bottom focuses more clearly on the subject, but I am left with what was the purpose of the shot.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your great comments! I love it when our blog gets a spurt of activity. It makes me happy :)

The sequence of these four pictures are as I took them. In the first and second pictures, I was literally trying the macro focusing capability of the LX5 for the first time. After I got those out of the way, I then started thinking more about the composition, as most of you agree that #3 and #4 are your favorites. I personally like #3 because it shows the dandelion in a field of green (in context). But I also like the sunset glow and subject isolation in #4.

Sunset at Sutro Baths

D200, Nikkor 24mm f2.8

It was a hot day yesterday, we decided to go out to see the sunset at Sutro Baths to cool down, and were treated to another nice and unique sunset view.

I went out with the D200 yesterday and I'll have more to post later. IQ is spectacular, in my opinion, what do you think? :)

Version Two, for Dan. I changed the white balance to make it a bit warmer, and backed off the vibrancy. Yes, I think this looks more natural. :)

I like the sensor's dr and the compostion is great, but the blue sky seems a bit off for a sunset image. Is that post processing or the camera's auto wb?

Blogger Warren T. said...

Believe it or not, last night's sunset really looked like that, blue sky above, golden sunset below. The only thing I did was to make it a little more vivid to my personal preference. What did you mean by "off", the fact that it was blue at all, or perhaps I overdid the saturation?

Yes, I love the DR of APS-C. It would have required much more work to wring this out of a Micro 4/3 sensor.

My personal taste is a little less saturation and let the natural light and color provide the drama. That is just me though. My two images are at sunrise and with the heavy haze I chose not to use any saturation or vibrance. Two ways to show views and two interpretations. That is what makes this fun.

I am partial to the 2nd version as well Warren, as I compare both images the transition area in the sky between the sun glow and the evening blue sky created a break to the eye. The second version has a better transition and seems to move between these colors less abruptly. Perhaps version 1 had a bit of posterization, which made an abrupt transition. Anyway, great image.

Sunset out the Back Window

D200, Nikkor 300mm f4.5

That's right, it was taken with a D200. I almost bought Joe's D200 recently, but Dolph was kind enough to send me his very lightly used D200 for me to play with because as you know, I never met an old camera I didn't like.

I received it Friday, and Friday after work, I unpacked it, and found that there was a little juice left in its battery so I started to play with different lenses on the camera, and also to get familiar with operating it.

I looked out the window and saw that the sun was setting so I threw the 300mm on it, and couldn't immediately figure out how to set focal length and max aperture on the D200 because I only handled the camera for about 5 minutes.

Even so, I still managed to grab this shot before the sun set completely. I later found that the D200 has a programmable function button that I programmed to let me quickly set FL and Max aperture whenever I change to a non-cpu lens. The ability to matrix meter with my old Nikkor ai/ais lenses is one of the features that I really wanted, but was not available on my ancient D100. But this ancient D200 has the feature, and a bunch of other improvements over my D100 that I can really appreciate.

I'll talk more about the D200 later, but suffice to say that the camera is rather beastly compared to the Micro 4/3 cameras that I've been using for the last couple of years.

Dan, we'll need to schedule another photo walk soon so that I can give you the 200 Micro, and also so I can check out your D800e.

Egret at Elkhorn Slough

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 45-200mm

Wildlife silhouette art :)

An egret hunts at sunset, the golden light creates a great background for a profile shot of the bird.

I watched the bird's hunting technique with great interest. Have you ever seen this? It would stir up the silt with one of its claws to disturb the creatures that live in there. The egret sees it and snatches it quickly with its beak.
