Moody Pacifica Hills
New camera alert! I decided to go super light and compact for our next trip, so I bought a Lumix DMC-LF1. I took the camera out for some testing yesterday. I shot jpg because I'm thinking about shooting jpg on our trip in order to be able to shoot roughly three times the number of pictures per SD card.
At pixel peeping viewing levels, I did notice some annoying jpg compresson artifacts, even at the lowest ISO, but once the pictures were processed and resized in Lightroom, it was hardly noticeable.
This image started out as a dynamic B&W jpg from the camera, but I ended up choosing a Lightroom preset for the look that I wanted.
I chose the LF1 because it has a few key features that seemed useful:
- Built-in EVF, amazing for a pocket sized camera It's tiny, has a diopter adjustment, and very useful in some situations.
- large zoom range, 28-200mm in 35mm equiv. By comparison, my LX5's range is 24-90mm
- Image stabilization
- Full manual control
- Shoots RAW, I may still shoot 100% RAW with it eventually, if not immediately

I agree, the compression artifacts are only noticeable at PP levels, and this should print up quite well. If you want send me a full sized jpg, and I will see what the Epson can do with the file. As far as the black bird goes, the bird looks a little soft. What was your point of focus, to me it seems the ice plant to the right is sharp. Is this a AF setting issue?
Regardless, nice new tool for your upcoming trip.

Dan, the point of focus on the bird was its head, but I think it was in motion, so perhaps a small amount of motion blur happened.
I think I have enough spare SD cards to allow me to shoot 100% RAW. I am not planning to bring laptop with LR this time, so all image processing will have to wait until I come home. If I shoot jpg, I can easily do some minor editing and posting on the road.

Sanderlings at Pacifica

I like these small shorebirds because they are so cute. In the first picture, a large wave came in and scattered them from the rock that they were standing on. I think they got tired after a while. Many of them were trying to rest in the midst of all the wind and waves. It's interesting that they can ignore all that to nap so close to the waves.

Not that it makes any diference to the quality of this series Warren, but I think these might be called Sanderlings, and not the threatened Snowy Plover that caused such an uproar. It looks like the new lens is being put to good use! Dan

On the Edge
This is one of the first shots from my newly acquired Lumix 100-300mm lens. I bought the lens along with the G5 because of a great promotion on Amazon.
This lens is amazingly sharp and stable even at full zoom. I am very impressed by its performance even after using it for just one session yesterday at Pacifica.

Thanks Dan. I was standing at the entrance to the Pacifica fishing pier. The pier was closed that day because of the high surf.

Geronimo!!!
Panasonic DMC-G1, Nikkor 300mm f4.5We went down the coast to Half Moon Bay and Pacifica today to see the big waves. Well, we've seen bigger, but I also took my manual focus Nikkor 300mm f4.5 out for a spin on the Lumix.
In case you missed the reference, U.S. GI Paratroopers used to yell "Geronimo!!!" when they jumped out of airplanes.

Hey Warren, is this the lens I gave you a while back? I like the composition with the rails providing a good structure, but not sure I like the Lumix's apparent chromatic aberation blue edge cast along the top rail. Do you think it is because of the high contrast and the senor's relative lack of being able to use the full resolving power of the lens?

hi Dan, yes, it's that lens. I don't think you're seeing CA. Look again, it's actually the blue sky reflected off the top rail. And I think the sensor is up to the task with regard to resolving power of the lens. In terms of CA, I think the Lumix 45-200mm has more than the Nikkor (which annoys me about that Lumix lens)
