Dockside Abstract

October Project: "Lines That Don't Like Being Lines"

As Lea alluded to, this month's project is severely difficult, but on the other hand, it is also extremely interesting to see what everyone comes up with.

All great stuff so far, I might add. :)

In this one, the shadow lines appear to follow the odd shape of this dockside line anchor (I don't know the proper name for these things).

Fun shots!

Interesting squareness in the Opposing Forces pic.. nothing quite square... the poses are quirky and the angles are awkward. The smiling shoelace line (that is not straight) is very friendly, with the bright green and yellow, and park visitors. #4 Very thoughtful and an awesome find... They're definitely *reddy* for the change in fuels. Toothy tunnel frame is nice. Feels a bit off-center but I like the concept of framed by a tunnel.

I am with Lea, that #4 is a nice image with the lens accentuating the shape of the landscape hardscape interface. I also enjoy #8 because of the unique geometry you captured. Is it me or does this sensor seem to have more DR than the Lumix of the same vintage?

#2 - Very pleasing curve of the pond, plus the nice contrast in tonality between the darks and light in the water and the dark water along the lighter-colored border of the pond.

#3 An intriguing shape that you made using the low angle and perspective stretching of a wide-angle view!

#6 Lovely subject, nicely framed.

#8 Beautiful composition you created by getting in close and the way the stems bow outward in a nice, symmetrical way. Also, before I saw the captuion, it left me wondering a bit - that' a good thing!

Chairs in the Sun

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 14mm f2.5

It was a sunny, warm day with a very high contrast light at that location, and I thought there was a picture in here somewhere. I played with different crops to create an abstract, but I'm not sure if it works. What do you think?

Story behind this one: It was on the day of the Blue Angels airshow. We met Dan, Lea, and Tyler at the Peace Plaza in Japantown. As we walked through the plaza, there were rows of chairs set up for a concert. It was a sunny, crisp day, and I was struck by the bright light contrasted by the dark chairs and the shadows under the chairs. I would consider this a "warm up"' shot, like I described a while back.

When I was reviewing my shots, I tried various crops and was never really satisfied with any of them, and I also considered leaving it in color vs. doing a B&W conversion.

Anyway, I thought I'd post it here to try and stimulate some discussion. It's okay to say that it didn't work for you (any of you) :).

I think it's great in b&w. The ambiguity between the shadows and chair legs works well... Maybe raising the camera a little higher would have made it a little more dynamic... I'm picturing myself also rotating the camera 45 degrees ccw, closer, and higher..

Hopefully that was constructive.. ?... D:

More Nikon FM Photos...

Just after I took a few snaps of the gentleman, this beautiful young woman stepped in to pose in front of the vintage bike. I think she looks like a young Joan Collins... maybe even more lovely.

The other photo is an abstract of shadows of the cast iron railing on the steps of a brownstone on W. 15th Street. The brownstone was indeed brown, and I gave it the sepia treatment.

These were taken with the Nikon FM that Warren generously gave me!
