Saturday with Warren Roll 1

Hey guys,
I met up with Warren and a couple other photography (/gear) enthusiasts in SF a couple weekends ago. I developed a roll of film from that day and here are some of the pictures.
I know this is the friendly photo forum but some friendly constructive criticism goes a long way :)
Best,

Nice smiles in #3, hi Gail and Warren ;)

I really like the relaxed body language in #6.

#9 is my fav. Just something wonderful about the energy, the tilt of the rooftop, hair blowing in the breeze; consumer of summer joy! :)

#10 is also great. I like the strangeness of tonalities of shadows and highlights.

If I was there by myself, I would probably have photographed some of those subjects myself :). But I decided to let you have exclusive shots on them. :)

Good shooting Keshav!

I like the eclectic mix of the day you added into your series. Makes for an interesting story to read through your pics. I also like that you are clearly relaxed when taking photos of strangers and meeting new people. An art form in itself.

My favorite has to be # 3 & # 8.

thanks for sharing

Very nice Warren. Not sure I have ever seen Brooklyn St. Great vertical element that contrasts with his position leaning forward.

Very nice geometries! Just a side question, maybe I asked you before -Do you shoot in b&w or edit in post process? Some people are surprised to hear of shooting in digital b&w, and not raw and converting later, since raw holds so much more data than jpg.. but I wonder if the quality of b&w composition is something that is more easily recognized by the photographer when shooting straight b&w rather than converting a colour image. What do you think? (question open to anyone) Either way, I feel that this image is an excellent use of b&w format.

Thanks for the comments Dan and Lea.

Lea, you asked a very good question. I think photographers who have experience with film have an easier time shooting digital b&w as raw, then converting later, because that's how film shooters have 'seen' anyway.

In my own case, I shoot in RAW and convert later either in LR or a combo of LR and Silver Efex Pro. If you shoot with an optical viewfinder, then you are 'seeing color' by default.

I would love to read answers from others, to this question.

Smokers Club

Leica M3, Leitz 50mm f2.8 Elmar, Kodak BW400CN

I had to grab this shot quickly because an instant after I took the picture, two of the guys finished and went back downstairs.

I see a lot of people standing or sitting outside their Mah Jong parlors, having a smoke or just taking a fresh air break.

I like your images Warren, where did you end up scanning and processing? The notion of grabbing a smoke and getting some fresh air is interesting.

Thanks Dan.

I went for convenience over quality, so I developed my two rolls at the usual place, Walgreens. Their scans are low-res, and barely good enough for web use. Fortunately, BW400CN scans well, and all the images required were some levels adjustment through Lightroom. I did not process these with Silver Efex.

This is an interesting story..... Mom, i've joined the Navy and I'm going to see in this ship that really doesn't work. Sally (the woman in the picture) doesn't want me to go because she doesn't think i'll return.

Other than this story, why would you stop nect to the pier with all the bird feathers and droppings?

Nice capture.

Sightseeing Break

Leica M3, Leitz 50mm f2.8 Elmar, Kodak BW400CN

I was walking quickly along the waterfront at Fisherman's Wharf, snapping pictures along the way. I was rushing a bit, to meet up with Dan. I didn't know it, but Dan was at the end of this block. When I walked through this covered area, a young man noticed my M3, and said, "Wow, that's a nice, old camera!". I told him that it's a 1959 camera, and as I turned around to continue walking, I saw this scene. I was a little surprised at how many people noticed and appreciated my old M3 that day. Later that day, we had dinner with a friend, and his brother, an electron microscope maintenance and repair expert REALLY appreciated being able to see and try the M3 in-person.

Leica M3, Leitz 50mm f2.8 Elmar, Kodak BW400CN

Hey Lea, let's see some of your extras from the Decisive Challenge photo day.

Joe, did you shoot that day?

Ted, I know you only took two shots, show us the one that you didn't submit. :P

Anyone else with some street work?

I have more to come... stay tuned. :)

Hi Warren, I'd love to show the other shot, but it's basically a bracketed version of the other (the scene was contrasty).

I wish I had gone out to do some real shooting on that day.

Looking forward to seeing your stuff and Gail's. I remember last year, her photo of the kids playing in the park was excellent!

Ahhh, I am being indecisive on which one to submit at the moment. I am carrying some of the self-doubt that the boy on the bench is expressing... Tyler is cheering for Gail to win it this year by the way. ;)

Resting Those Tired Dogs

Leica M3, Leitz 50mm f2.8 Elmar, Kodak 400CN

A tourists rests his tired feet on a bench at the Modern Jewish Museum Plaza. When I first walked there, he apparently thought that I was worthy of a picture so he brazenly photographed me and my Leica. Later, I returned the favor by getting his picture, LOL! :) He was shooting a large Canon DSLR with what looked like a large wide angle prime lens.

It had been a while since I shot film because I've been busy learning, using, and enjoying the Lumix M43 cameras since last March except for that short test roll with the Olympus Stylus P&S. These b&w film shots take my breath away with their dynamic range and tonality (even though they are horrible Walgreens scans), and reminds me once again that IMO, it's still worthwhile to shoot film once in a while for the "look" and for the pleasure of using a favorite film camera.

Follow Me!

Leica M3, Leitz 50mm f2.8 Elmar, Kodak 400CN

I am very interested to know what you folks think of my recently posted shots from my M3, and whether or not they are anywhere near: "in the style of HCB" :).

Also, I wouldn't mind some discussion about this month's project either online or offline (individually) if you're so inclined. We can discuss any image, talk about what worked or what didn't work, and why.

As always, viewing an exhibit is very inspirational for me, and I think in this case, it was really fun to go out to Yerba Buena Gardens right after viewing the HCB exhibit. Using my M3 w/50mm made the experience especially pleasant.

Thanks,

Warren
