Hello, It's Me

Panasonic DMC-G1, Konica Hexanon 40mm f1.8

More goodness from the Hexanon 40mm, we were at Yerba Buena Gardens where I handed Gail the camera and told her to take my picture.

She was not used to the manual focus, but one of the three pictures that she took of me came out sharp. She took the shot horizontally, and I cropped it to portrait format in post-processing.

Follow Me!

Leica M3, Leitz 50mm f2.8 Elmar, Kodak 400CN

I am very interested to know what you folks think of my recently posted shots from my M3, and whether or not they are anywhere near: "in the style of HCB" :).

Also, I wouldn't mind some discussion about this month's project either online or offline (individually) if you're so inclined. We can discuss any image, talk about what worked or what didn't work, and why.

As always, viewing an exhibit is very inspirational for me, and I think in this case, it was really fun to go out to Yerba Buena Gardens right after viewing the HCB exhibit. Using my M3 w/50mm made the experience especially pleasant.

Thanks,

Warren

Photo Spot

Leica M3, Leitz 50mm f2.8 Elmar, Kodak 400CN

Since RFF only allows two entries for their "Decisive Challenge", I am posting some of the other images that I made from that day (Nov. 14, 2010).

It was hard to choose only two pictures from the bunch that I took.

Birds at Yerba Buena Garden

Lumix DMC-GF1, Lumix 45-200mm

I'm using two new pieces of Micro 4/3 equipment here. It was a warm day last Monday, and I was at Yerba Buena Gardens to try out the new equipment.

I'm posting a few while I'm still here because I'll be away for a while. You guys have to take over posting for the next 10 days or so :).

I'll be ordering the optional external EVF for the GF1 when I get back. It was very bright and sunny that day, and it was especially challenging (though not impossible as you can see) to use the rear LCD under these conditions.

I really like the first one -the silhouette of the crow. Very nice depth of field. Liking that the camera is on the water level (is that water? :) and that midnight blue in the background is Awesome!! Beautiful work.

Thanks Lea. The bird in the first picture is a little blackbird, like the one in the 4th picture. Yes, that is water, a fountain actually. It was a warm, sunny day, and a lot of birds were taking advantage of all the fountains at the YB Gardens.

Three Uses for a Lawn

Canon S90

There were only two in this Yerba Buena Gardens scene originally, then the woman in the foreground walked up and plopped herself down for a nap right in front of me.

Meditations on a Fountain

Nikon D100, Nikkor 105mm f2.5

This series was taken during my photography walkabout at Yerba Buena Gardens last weekend.

Under fading light, I took advantage of the speed, resolution, and superb image quality of the Nikkor 105mm f2.5.

Which are your impressions in general, and which image is your favorite (and why) in this series?

Hi Warren, I like the 2nd to the last here.

The 105/2.5 Nikkor is one of my favorite lenses. Which version did you get (there are 15 or so), I have the P*C one, the first F mount version designed with Gauss design and 7 blades.

Hi Ted,

I have two of them. :) The first one I've had since the mid-70's. It's a P*C like yours, Gauss design, and with the metal fluted focusing ring. It is in excellent condition and non-ai, and I was hesitant to send it out for conversion. So, I was deeply missing using it on my ai cameras, especially my D100, so a couple of years ago, I bought an ai version of the same lens. This one is just slightly later than my original, but it has the rubberized focusing ring and is not as pristine, but as you can see, performs great as you would expect.

Obviously, this is one of my favorite lenses too.

#4 is the winner for me. The flower floating on the highlight relection makes it.

I think my personal favorites are 4,5, and 6. In #5, that bit of white reflection almost looks alive and 3 dimensional. #4 was my first image of the flower in the fountain after I spotted it. I took a number of them, but I chose 4 and 5 as the best. I have no idea how that flower ended up there, but it made a great prop.

On #6, I like it because of shape of the reflection formed an arrowhead that points to the fountain.

None of these shot would have been possible had I rushed through here. It took a certain amount of contemplation before I was able to see shots.

Warren,

I enjoy #5 because of the slight movement of the water, light in the backgroud, and flowers. I wonder where the water is going to take the flower.

Nice composition. Makes we think!

Bougainvillea at Yerba Buena Gardens

Nikon D100, Nikkor 105mm f2.5

I used SFMOMA as the background for this threadbare Bougainvillea plant. It should be full again once it's in season.
