Ghent, Belgium at Night

Lumix G5, Lumix 20mm f1.7
Taken: June 2013

I thought I'd kick off this month's project with one from the archives. This is a night scene taken in Ghent, Belgium one year ago.

There's nothing fancy here in terms of technique, I handheld the camera while bracing the camera on a railing on the bridge that we were standing on.

The Night is Still Young

Lumix LX5

Continuing to post my other shots from the Decisive Challenge, winter edition. The Santacon was on that day, and there were santas all over Chinatown/North Beach that night. Lea might recognize this moment (because she was there with us that night).

Moonrise Over the East Bay

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 45-200mm

Here's that moonrise that I mentioned in my previous post. This is a 3.2 sec. exposure at ISO 200.

WOW....you don't see flat water on a somewhat clear night in the Bay Area. Nice use of the lights against the dark water.

Bay Bridge at Night

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 45-200mm

I rarely do night shots, but one night last year, I felt like shooting a moonrise and the Bay Bridge was nearby so I photographed the bridge as well.

This was taken at ISO 100 with a tripod.

When I have time, I'll post some moonrise pictures, but it really wasn't that good a night for moon pictures because it was a bit hazy over the Bay.

I like all the vertical lines and how they disappear into the darkness, at what seems to be varying heights... Interesting blue and yellow lighting. :)

Fisherman's Wharf at Night

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 14-45mm

This was taken on the day after Christmas. We were hoping that the boats still had their Christmas lights on, but only a few had them.

The Zipper!

ZipperMidsummer in upper Anne Arundel County means the Earleigh Heights VFC Carnival. I haven't strolled through while it was operating for six years, so I decided to take my camera one night this week.

Shooting these rides seems really hard, at least for me. I did manage to get three or four decent photos, and I'll post the others over the next few days.

Lagoon at Night, Crissy Field

It was almost pitch black out there, but I still got something interesting :).

Clouds and reflections are so pronounced, cameras are amazing! Did you lighten the photo up with software or is this just from camera settings? Pretty cool :)

Wow, I wouldn't have bothered trying to take a photo, but I'm sure glad *you* did. This is a beautiful image! The "grain" actually adds to the image.

Thanks for the comments :).

Lea, I lightened the image with Photoshop. The old technology of the SD300 (highest ISO is 400 and with lots of digital noise) could barely eek out an image. So instead of wrestling with it to reduce noise, I sort of incorporated it into the final image.

Warren,

Not typical of your work. I like the composition and the use of the noise. Looks very old!

Thanks Dolph. I played with converting this to B&W, but IMO it worked better with the colored noise/dots. It's sort of like an impressionist painting, IMO.

Golden Gate at Night

Canon SD300

It was a crisp and clear night because of the recent rains. Luckily I had a camera with me. These were taken while braced on a fence post in front of the lagoon at Crissy Field.

Warren,

A difficult shot. What is interesting is that the lights of the cars on the bridge appear to be standing still. Maybe they aren't the car headlights but lights on the bridge.

I like the second shot the best.

Thanks,

Hong Kong Night Scene

The trip to China was fun, but the best part was Hong Kong. The food and the feeling of the area (due to both British and Chinese influence) is different from all of the other places. It's my favorite place in China so far. Here is a night shot on Temple Street. All of the neon signs reminded me of Japan.

Bromo Tower at Dusk

Bromo Tower - Baltimore, MarylandSometimes it pays to work late.

I was heading back to the Light Rail stop about 9 PM tonight, and the sky was geting darker, but not yet black. Looking up just about a half-block away from my stop, I noticed how the nicely-lit the Bromo Tower contrasted with the dark blue sky.

I didn't bring one of my small digicam tripods with me today, but there was a handy, flat-topped traffic barrel in just about the right spot to rest Ben's flat-sided Canon A630. I took about 25 exposures at the longest tele setting (equivalent to 135mm on 35mm) from ISO 80 to 400. This was the best of the lot at ISO 100.

Striking colors! This is my favorite time of the day for shades of blue. I like how you positioned the two structures in the foreground. BTW, I don't think I personally would have had the patience to take 25 shots of the same scene! :)
