One of my favorite sunrise/set areas. Nothing can match this landscape. I really like the foreground reflection it adds depth and complexity to the image.

Welcome back Steve! When you have a chance, please tell us about how you made this picture (if you want to). For those of you who are new here, Steve Fong has been away for a while, and hopefully he'll stick around and post some more pictures. :)

This photo was shot on a Nikon D3s, 14-24mm at 14mm, f2.8, ISO 6400, 30 seconds. The Trees were light painted with a dim incandescent flashlight for about 8 seconds total. Ideally, a 20 second exposure would have frozen the stars better, but would have reduced the capture of the core of the milky way. Next time, I will shoot scene at ISO 8000 at 20 seconds and see if it captures the galactic core as well as the 30 second shot.

Nicely done Steve, the composition and your technique especially painting the foreground Joshua is fantastic. I just ordered a Lupine flash light and hope to play with the technique you have perfected.

Dan,
Thanks for the compliments. My technique is far from perfected. You should have seen the other shots that didn't work out. I was on a photo tour and got a lot of help. The guy leading the tour is fantastic. I learned so much from him.
BTW, It helps to have a remote wireless shutter release so that you can position yourself off to the side to paint the trees. I used an old mag light that was quite dim by todays standards. - Dolph Brust said...

Steve,
This is interesting work. The direction of the shot makes it look like a city over the hill, or was it a sunrise?
It is a great shot, now I want to go and try this over the Everglades in florida.

Dolph,
thanks for the kind words. The glow in the background could not be seen with the naked eye. It is the light pollution coming from Las Vegas over 150 miles away and LosAngeles several hundred miles away. It was pitch black out there. This was shot around 4AM.
The camera picks up stuff we cant see due to the long exposure time. - Unknown said...

Three wonderful photos, Lena. I especially like the one of the woman in the foreground, birds in the middle-ground, and the man with parasail in the background.

Great composition created by a different angle than we would normally look at this type of subject.

Sutro Sam
This was taken on Feb. 21st, my birthday. I've been looking for Sutro Sam, a wild river otter who took up residence at the Sutro Bath Ruins, ever since he was mentioned in the local media a couple of months ago. Sutro Sam made an appearance for me that day. After brunch at the Cliff House, we walked down to the bath ruins, where I saw Sam eating a fish at the side of the fresh water pond.
I heard that Sam has not been seen since February 23rd, and may have gone away, either because he has run out of food here, or because he is looking for a mate (it is spring after all). :)
I also took a short video of Sam using the same equipment combo: G5 and 100-300mm lens. I uploaded it to Youtube (link here: Sutro Sam Youtube Video).

I would swear that you took this in Europe. You are practicing for that trip I hear. As Steve noted nice angles with the Spire in the apex of the triangle.

Great texture, and I like how you can also see water motion in contrast to the frozen bits.

Dan, this is a very interesting photo. I like the knots in the fallen tree, the reflections in the back of the pond, and the frozen waves. All this makes for an interesting image to look at and realize nature in action, even if frozen.

LOL! Good one, Dan. The photographer was going for a low angle shot, shooting up a the woman's face but it really looks like he is aiming for her shoes... :)
Modern Cloister
This place normally looks gray and dull, but on this day I noticed the yellow light reflected off the ground, adding a splash of color to the scene.

Brilliantly atmospheric and dramatic. The clouds washing over the dead wood, not ready to touch down in the form of rain....... Spellbinding and whimsical. Textures and pov are great. Love it!
Im going to follow Lea's comment with "YES"
Beautiful and dramatic, Steve.
