Welcome back Steve! When you have a chance, please tell us about how you made this picture (if you want to). For those of you who are new here, Steve Fong has been away for a while, and hopefully he'll stick around and post some more pictures. :)

This photo was shot on a Nikon D3s, 14-24mm at 14mm, f2.8, ISO 6400, 30 seconds. The Trees were light painted with a dim incandescent flashlight for about 8 seconds total. Ideally, a 20 second exposure would have frozen the stars better, but would have reduced the capture of the core of the milky way. Next time, I will shoot scene at ISO 8000 at 20 seconds and see if it captures the galactic core as well as the 30 second shot.

Nicely done Steve, the composition and your technique especially painting the foreground Joshua is fantastic. I just ordered a Lupine flash light and hope to play with the technique you have perfected.

Dan,

Thanks for the compliments. My technique is far from perfected. You should have seen the other shots that didn't work out. I was on a photo tour and got a lot of help. The guy leading the tour is fantastic. I learned so much from him.

BTW, It helps to have a remote wireless shutter release so that you can position yourself off to the side to paint the trees. I used an old mag light that was quite dim by todays standards.

Steve,

This is interesting work. The direction of the shot makes it look like a city over the hill, or was it a sunrise?

It is a great shot, now I want to go and try this over the Everglades in florida.

Dolph,

thanks for the kind words. The glow in the background could not be seen with the naked eye. It is the light pollution coming from Las Vegas over 150 miles away and LosAngeles several hundred miles away. It was pitch black out there. This was shot around 4AM.

The camera picks up stuff we cant see due to the long exposure time.
