Pick'n At Seed

I brought some birdseed with me last Sunday morning to the pond and thew some on this fallen log at the edge of the water.

Of all the ducks and geese in the pond, this one was the only one with enough initiative to hop onto the log. I enjoyed watching him chow down.

Formation Splashdown

These Canada geese are part of a flock that arrived here years ago on a tourist visa while migrating South and decided to stay. For some reason, USCIS doesn't seem to be interested in doing anything about it. And since I'm married to a Canadian, I have a little compassion for them, so I'm not complaining.

They don't do much but waddle around, eat, poop, and kvetch loudly ... but every once in a while, a flight of them will take off, circle around to the main road, and come back for a water landing. When they do, you can get some good photos.

It was another picture perfect, gorgeous day on the Bay. We watched the airshow from Fort Point which is at the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge. I wasn't out to specifically photograph the show, but since I was out to see them anyway, well of course I couldn't help taking a few shots...

Panic Button

Eric's shadow pattern image (the previous post) reminded of this one that I shot at the Monterey Historic Races. This is a close-up of an emergency fire extinguisher switch located near the windshield of a race car. I thought the shadows, button, and loop retainer made an interesting pattern.  

Would anyone care to guess which race car this is?

I made my annual trek to the Monterey Historic Races at Laguna Seca Raceway last weekend. Aside from enjoying the racing, I always like to wander the pit area to view the historic race cars up close. Here is a particularly handsome example of a Trans Am era, early-70's Camaro.

I decided to keep it simple this year so I only brought my D100 and one lens.

Here's a seldom seen angle of SF's Downtown skyline as viewed from the west looking east.

People familiar with SF should recognize many of the tall buildings in the distance.

I often read the equipment-centric photo forums where someone would wax poetic about the "feel" of a particular camera body or the "signature" of a particular lens. While appreciating great gear is a perfectly good and worthy aspect of the hobby of photography, wouldn't all that equipment greatness be rendered irrelevant if the other factors were not up that standard? You know, factors such as light, composition, and subject, to name a few.

If the picture has an impact, if a picture makes you feel an emotion, if a picture has relevance to you, or if a picture brings visual and aesthetic pleasure, does it matter what camera and lens was used to create it?

A lone cyclist looks out through the Golden Gate toward the ocean from Fort Point at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. This shot was taken from the bridge looking down.

Interestingly, I was thinking "black & white" when I saw this composition in my mind.
