Pick'n At Seed

Of all the ducks and geese in the pond, this one was the only one with enough initiative to hop onto the log. I enjoyed watching him chow down.

you have a lot of unusually posed duck shots :).
The swirly background reminds me of a professional portrait backdrop.

;-) these guys are endlessly entertaining! They get themselves into these funny positions when they groom themselves. This is the first time I noticed it when one was eating though.
I've even noticed some of the mallards scratching (?) themselves behind their ears (?) from time to time. One day, I hope to catch *that* - Dolph Brust said...

I had to laugh when I first saw this picture. Ducks are always great characters. The picture is interesting because of the lighting. It almost looks, like Warren said, "painted."

Under the Bridge

Through a little Googling, I found that the white "AFLAC" ducks are called Pekin Duck or (in the USA) Long Island Duck. They developed in China centuries ago. When you have roast duck or duck eggs, it's most likely that you're eating one of these quackers.
After hanging around these guys, I've really grown to like them. I think I'll stick to chicken.

Nice interplay of lines with the arches of the bridge and the line of ducks, making the image very pleasant to view.

Formation Splashdown

They don't do much but waddle around, eat, poop, and kvetch loudly ... but every once in a while, a flight of them will take off, circle around to the main road, and come back for a water landing. When they do, you can get some good photos.

clear the runway!!!!! or we'll POOP on you!
great shot! I love how in focus they are... i think they're even looking at your camera too :) - Warren T. said...

Great action shot, did you shoot in single frame or continuous mode? Just wondering... :)
--WT - Steve Rosenbach said...

I almost always leave my camera in machine-gun mode ;-)
In this case, I watch as the bunch of them circle around and started to come in for a landing, then started shooting. This happened about three or four times.
What you're not seeing is the six or eight frames from each pass that were duds ;-) This was only one of two frames that were worthwhile. - Warren T. said...

I almost never use my camera in continous, probably because of force of habit from my extensive film shooting experience :). That's why you get these cool shots, and I don't.
Did you also shoot in AF mode? Does your camera have continuous focus and/or focus tracking?

Hi Warren - yeah, I figure with an 8G card, there's no reason *not* to leave it in continuous mode ;-)
I often use a burst when I set up a photo so that someone or something is walking/driving/running into the frame. Then I have 2, 3 or more shots, and one usually is better-placed or a better gesture or body position than the others.
Canon DSLRs do have a focus-tracking mode, but I didn't use it - I was in "one-shot" focus mode, where the AF locks at the first half-press of the shutter. I actually haven't tried to other modes (there's a third mode - can't remember what it is) and I should try focus-tracking.

I had to look up the word: katchke, LOL :).
That Tamron SuperZoom is very sharp.

:-) :-)
It means duck in Yiddish - it's actually a western Slavic word - the same word is in Polish and Ukranian, and there are very similar words in Czech and Slovak.
I don't know if it will come through on the web, but in Yiddish, it's spelled like this:
קאַטשקע
It's one of those Yiddish words that always makes me grin. I think it's a combination of the way it sounds to my Americanized ears as well as what it means - ducks are fun and funny, after all!
The Tamron zoom is surprisingly sharp, although not as sharp as, say, the 18-55mm kit zooms for both Canon & Nikon. When I first tried it out, I was disappointed when I looked at files at 100% size -- but then I tried printing those same images at 13x19", and they were just fine.
I tend to keep it at f/8 - it's best lens opening - the image stabilization is supurb, btw.
From what I hear, the 18-200mm Nikon zoom is of the same optical quality. - Lea said...

Blue Heron on Far Bank

The pond has a large permanent population of various kinds of ducks and geese. Like much of the mid-Atlantic, formerly migratory Canada geese have made a permanent home here.
If you get here early enough, you may luck out and spot a blue heron who also makes his home here.
This place is only about a half-mile from my mom's place, so I've been bringing my camera whenever I go to see her, in case I have a few minutes to stop and see my feathered friends.

The heron is nicely illuminated here, and the foreground gives the shot an impressionistic feel.
BTW, Steve, I haven't forgotten about sending you the gear. I've been hideously busy lately and I have not had a chance to put the stuff together yet.

Thanks, Warren.
About the gear - no problemo! Whenever it arrives is fine - it'll be when I don't expect it and brighten up my day ;-)

Wonderful compostion with the back light and texture of the water

Steve,
This picture almost looks like it was pressed onto aluminum. The combination of the lighting, colors, and thin legs of the bird make this dramatic. Very interesting. I sometimes don't look at the heron because it is all around us down here in florida.
Dolph
Spectacular picture!
Dolph, I really enjoy your interpretations of images. I like the "pressed onto aluminum" viewpoint, it's very insightful!

Dude, this looks like a Chinese painting!
