Yohei from Tokyo

I was waiting in the park for Tyler, and this friendly stranger approached explaining he had just arrived 3 weeks ago from Japan. Every day he comes to this same park and speaks with native English speakers to practice listening and speaking (he wants to have better scores at school for listening tests). So he's spoken with 60 people in 3 weeks, and takes a selfie with each one. We scrolled through a few of them on his phone. And after all the leg work of the stranger project was done (minus me actually taking a photo as well), I asked if I could get a photo of him too. There's his thumbs up! Yohei really enjoys Vancouver and said it's full of much more nature than Tokyo. He seemed impressed by how many people ride bikes and go running in the city here. After about 10 minutes he politely said goodbye and carried on.

Ski Rixen - Not So Quiet Waters Park

I was invited out to the Ski Rixen in Quiet waters park to get some shots of some of the amazing wake boarder's that were going to be there last Friday. Certainly will not be my last.  Now I just need to change up some angles and find a way to get closer. Shot all these with my 85mm prime.

Whoa, exciting! I really like the first one; how you processed it and the separation of boarder and treetops. And the last one somehow has a comic book appeal - the bright colours and the awkward bends in the limbs. Nice work!

Welcome home, Lena!

That dog looks like it is about to attack the ice cream :)

This beach must experience very low tides, nice view.

Feral Kittens

Lumix G5, Lumix 100-300mm

Our friend, Bob, affectionately refers to them as his "Grand Kids". These two were hiding in the bushes in his backyard. They are very timid, and get scared easily, so I had to be extremely stealthy with my shooting. The G5's optional electronic shutter really helped because the E-shutter makes absolutely no noise at all.

We had a cat that decided to have her kittens in the walls of an old shed when I was about.. 7 or 8 years old.. They were super cute and we never got to pet them, it was terrible! ;) I'm impressed you got this close. They are pretty adorable, but recalling a lot of hissing noise.

Ooo and I used my E-shutter (didn't know that's its name) at a book launch last week. One more useful use of it...

Vintage Scene

Lumix LF1

This was shot in Carmel during the Motorsport Reunion Week. It was in the early evening, and I had a really nolstalgic feeling when looking at this vintage Porsche 550. When I took the picture, I had a B&W image in mind.

Too bad the car had a a web site address graphic on it, which kind of ruined the illusion. :)

Commercial Pier - Lens Testing

I met a Photographer on Craigslist looking for some new glass. We hit it off and now i have a new buddy to shoot with. Turns out she has a bag of amazing glass as well. Also turns out I have a new camera to test it out on.

Most of these shots were taken with the Nikkor 14-24mm and one with the 24-70mm. I purchased a D810 a couple weeks ago. Its as if a whole new world has opened up.

FYI - I do enjoy the Photo forum and realize that jumping onto a larger platform will also muddle the personal experience that is very difficult to duplicate on todays social super highway. Sometimes being ok with no change is the best kind of change.

Nice kick-off for your new tool Carl. Seems you are already using it to perfection. I can't say enough about my d800e, and the 810 could only be better. In a few hours I am heading to Yellowstone with the Nikon and a full lens kit. Hope to share when I get back next month.

Thanks Dan & Warren!

Cant wait to see some yellow stone shots. You are going for a full month? Exciting!

I know you are off the grid right now. When you get back I would be very interested to know what is in your full lens kit & what you enjoy using the most.

I love the D810... I wrestled for a while on whether I was ready for a purchase like this or not but after getting my hands on the files I wont be able to go back. Not that I dont still love my other camera but the possibilities even with my DX len's opened up a whole new world of shooting.

*** Does anybody understand why for instance the Nikkor 24-70 shows so much more color than the 14-24mm on the same settings. They both have all the add ons one would expect from an expensive top tier Nikon lens and the 14-24 is supposed to be the mac daddy of wide angles yet I saw so much more color in my raw files from the couple of shots I took with the 24-70. ***

A Face in the Crowd

Lumix GF1

Shot last weekend at the Mid-Autumn (Mooncake) Festival in Chinatown.

Happy 10th Anniversary to us! I thank all of you, my FPCF Friends, for making this blog a really fun and interesting place to be.

I decided to continue as-is for now, and I will send out a more detailed private email with my additional thoughts on the topic, but for now, please continue contributing as you have been doing.

Gail and I will be away for a couple of months and I'll be enjoying our blog from afar. Please keep posting! I want to see what's happening back home!

Seeing the the world through you eyes and vision is very important to me.

Happy Shooting!

Enjoy your trip! I would love to see more from this festival.

What is this Mooncake you speak of and does it taste as good as it sounds?

Great Photo...

Carl, I didn't take very many pictures that day, it was way too crowded for our taste (as you can see in the photo). We were on our way somewhere else anyway, just passing through.

If you want to know more about Mooncakes, Google: "Mooncake". Dolph had one on his last visit to SF.
