Museum Entrance at Twilight

Panasonic DMC-G1, Nikkor-H 50mm f2

This is the front of the new Academy of Sciences building in Golden Gate Park.

I read a lot about the virtues of the Nikkor 50mm f2 lenses, especially the early ones. I recently acquired a barely working Nikkormat FT with this lens attached to it. The lens has a nasty dent in the filter ring, but its glass is in good shape. It is early slr version of this lens: Nikkor-H 50mm f2, non-ai, single coated.

I always wanted to try one, and now I have a chance. I will also shoot some film with it when I have a chance, but for now, it will be a nice, short-tele, lens on my Lumix cameras.

Two of my undecided upon photos for the Decisive Challenge. Shot on the same day as the challenge so I didn't post now until the voting is closed... didn't want to potentially give away my location! ;)~

Thanks Warren for inviting to the challenge!

Lea, since Gail chose the camera bag, that leaves you with the 100' of film. I guess you have no choice but to get into film photography, right?! :)

Lea,

I think 100' of film equates to about 18 rolls of 36 exp. You'll need to pick up a bulk film loader, and some reusable film cartridges. Most people who bulk load usually develop the film themselves, otherwise you'll need to find a lab who will give you your film canisters back for reloading. There are Caffenol film developing recipes that I've been meaning to try (developer based on instant coffee), or you can use traditional chemicals. I also have developing tanks that you can borrow if you want.

One website devoted to Caffenol deveoping: http://www.caffenol.org/

I have the option for boxed roll film --I think that would be easier/better for me. What kind of camera would you recommend I try?

And coincidentally, I watched a do-it-yourself Caffenol video this morning and was thinking of trying it! Will check out the website as well :)

Composite Images of the Bridge

On a rare sunny August sunset in San Francisco, I spent a little time on Hawkhill.  Both images are composites.  The first is a stitched and the second is a HDR.  For me I prefer the stitch.  What does everyone else think?  I used a GND filter for the stitched image and it seems a tad more realistic.  Leica M9, CV 35mm Nokton

I like the stiched image more because of darker colors. On the HDR, do you know the settings you used and how many pictures. I'm reading about taking some HDR and am curious.

Dolph, I used 3 images, bracketed 1/3 of an ev apart. All of the settings were left at default. I then did some minor clean up in LR on the resulting TIFF file. I continue to be less than enthusiastic about HDR and it maybe more related to my skills than the technique. I look forward to looking at your efforts. One thing I think is essential is the use of a very steady platform during the capture. This image was done with my camera resting on a guardrail, but a tripod is usually called for.

Americas Cup Races

As a prelude to next year's Americas Cup, sailboat racing was on the bay this past week.  I ventured out with a rental lens and tried my luck at capturing some of the action.  Crowds exceeded 40,000 for the free event.   Nikon d800e, Nikon AFS 300 f2.8, I also used a 1.7 TC on the first few in this series.  Also, as you can see #2 is a crop from #3, I was impressed with the lens/TC capturing this level of detail at approximately 100 yards.   Dan

Thanks Dan.

I went for convenience over quality, so I developed my two rolls at the usual place, Walgreens. Their scans are low-res, and barely good enough for web use. Fortunately, BW400CN scans well, and all the images required were some levels adjustment through Lightroom. I did not process these with Silver Efex.

Piazza della Minerva, Rome

While wandering the alleys of Rome, we found this old Egyptian statue that had been taken and never returned.  It is remarkable that after all the years the details still remain.
