Crabs!

Lumix G5, Lumix 100-300mm

A crabby series! :)

We were in Sausalito last month walking on Bridgeway, the street right next to the water. The sun was just coming out when we saw these little crabs sneaking up out of the water to get some sun for themselves. They were small, only around 3 to 5 inches across and they were shy. If you get too close, they go back into hiding.

Richardson Bay

HTC One X

It was an absolutely gorgeous day last Sunday for a bike ride (and for anything else for that matter). I rode from my house to as far as Mill Valley and back, a 28 mile round trip. I had to stop to take a picture here. This was taken at Richardson Bay, just north of Sausalito. You can see the houseboats in the distance.

What a wonderful combination of your bike and a camera. I really like the use of the bike in the front. Makes me feel like it is a place that not everyone get to see.

Clouds Over SF Bay

Panasonic DMC-G1, Konica Hexanon 50mm f1.7

This is a view from the waterfront at Sausalito.

I took my Hexanon 50mm f1.7 out for a spin on the Lumix yesterday. It was supposed to rain yesterday, but instead we got some dramatic clouds in the sky.

Sausalito Dockyards Revisited - Ektar Roll

Hi Folks,

Just when I thought that shooting film is too much of a hassle, I finally get my scanned roll of Kodak Ektar 100 back from a lab in Austin, TX. I am very pleased with the results.

A couple of firsts here, this is my first ever roll of Ektar, and the first time that I am trying this mail-order lab. The Ektar has some punch to it, for sure, but I think just the fact that it's film also gives it a different look than the usual digital stuff.

I shot this roll with my Nikon F4s and Nikkor 35mm f2.0 last January on a photo outing with Dan to Sausalito. Using the F4s was, as always, a real pleasure. Yes, it's huge and heavy, but for me it's so familiar to me that using it is second nature. The Nikkor 35mm f2.0 lens is a manual focus lens, so it has a very comfortable and well damped focus action.

Do you remember the first few that we posted last January? If not, you'll need to go back into the January 2011 archives to view them. That day, I also used my Lumix G1 and Lumix 45-200mm.

Here are some selected images from that roll. Tell me what you think of them, and also which ones are your favorites :).

I remember the day well Warren. I am partial to #s 6 and 13. Did you do any PP on these, the colors seem to favor the blues, much like the Velvia, although not as much? I have gotten similar color shifts when scanning on the Epson.

As always your compositions are great.

Thanks Dan. I think Ektar's colors are much more natural than Velvia. I did some very minor PP, just a little bit of levels adjustment.

I'll post some comments on these after I hear from some more people.

The corrosion blue/brown tones on #6 are awesome. LOL --"stop mad cowboy disease".
I really like the mailbox shot #9, as my favourite from the series. The dof keeps the attention to the detail of the rusty mailbox but the perspective leads us out to the sunny place, maybe where the mail arrives from --there is a distinct Here and There feeling, which seems just perfect for this.

Forgotten but not Gone

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 45-200mm

Mother Nature is trying to reclaim these boats, but she still has a long way to go.

I found these behind the trailer pictured in Dan's previous post. Ironically, the location is at a company that repaints boats. There was a SFFD fire boat at the yard that was recently painted a brilliant red color. I'm sure you'll see our film shots of it later after we get the film processed.

The contrast between rusted old and new green is great! It looks as though the grass is tugging the boats into the land. They should just plant some flowers in there and they'd look even more charming.

Great Blue Heron in Sausalito

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 45-200mm

This is the Blue Heron that I was stalking in Dan's previous post. I brought my G1 w/45-200mm along on the shoot, in anticipation of an opportunity like this one :).

We walked the "non-tourist" shoreline of Sausalito, seeing various piers and shipyards. Our theme was "Nautical".

I also shot a partial roll of Ektar 100 in my Nikon F4s. It's the first time that I tried this film. I'll post some shots when I get the roll processed one of these days.

Wonderful nature photo. Ya done good to get him against the dark rock background. I also like the way the shadow on the rock is almost at the same angle as his head and beak.

Thanks Steve :). The heron was cooperating by standing as still as a statue.

More info: I think every photographer lives for these photo opportunities, and I couldn't be more pleased with this picture. The late-afternoon light falling on the heron was perfect, and it happened to be standing in front of the rocks that were in shadow. I spotted it from about 100 yards away, and I decided to make my way, very slowly, down to the end of the dock. I made it as far as the stern of the boat closest to the heron (see Dan's picture). The heron was keeping a close eye on me, but it remained in place and kept very still.

I had a chance to take a number of shots, and I had enough time to think about camera settings. I switched ISO to 200 (from auto-ISO) to make sure that the camera didn't automatically choose too high an ISO. I wanted maximum IQ, yet had to make sure that I was within the acceptable shooting parameters of using the long zoom lens handheld.

The G1 w/45-200mm performed well. I could hear the high-pitched, soft squeal of the len's image stabilization working as I squeezed off my shots.

I also got a few of the heron from above, with water in the background, but I believe this shot was of the best of the bunch.

I like Steve's note of the shadows which I may have otherwise overlooked. Such a subtle touch. I keep seeing an eye in the wing, like that of a shark or dolphin looking back at us. So curious.. ;) Great shot anyway, if you don't see those imaginary sea creatures that i do. (:

Warren,

That is just too good. First you have the back ground that matches the subject, then your subject stands still while you climb around to get a good angle, and then you are going to tell me the sun waited for you to give you perfect side lighting.......THAT'S JUST TOO GOOD.

She Struck a Pose

Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix 20mm f1.7

For some reason, this woman struck a photogenic pose in front of this store in Sausalito. It would have been better if the bike rider was not there, but if I waited until he left, she probably would have moved by then and the moment would have been lost forever. :)
