Yes, a catch light on the eyes would have been nice, but this was not a planned photo session. We just happened upon a man and his puppy while walking around Carmel one day. There was not much time to think about it, but if I did think about it, I suppose I would have used the pop-up flash on the D100 for flash fill.

Thanks, Warren,for posting the original and the alternative cropping. I tend to go for the seemingly over-cropped one,which now appears to be the best solution under the given circumstances.

Looks fine without pop-up flash to me.
i dodged the pup's eyes a little to bring out some faint highlights. I could also add some catchlights using Photoshop, but I don't really want to do go through that exercise on this image.
