Home with Light and Shadow

The light in the morning this time of year in our latitude provides great angles till mid morning.  Leica M240, Noctilux 50mm

The chair in the lower left makes me want to put it to the right of my previous pic... Kindred chair fragmenting.

Nice abstractions of the home. The shadowing provides a slight surreal quality. A hovering table o,O The second image is so vague, I like it. It took me a few minutes to see that it wasn't three poles together, and rather, just one. That super thin sliver of light bouncing back from the wall onto the pole is also adding to the uniqueness.

All Blue for Winter

Continuing the monthly project --things in your house/dwelling.

Would you like some stories too?

:)

The sea shells hanging on the left were purchased at a building's tenant used-and-unwanted-stuffs sale. I have a friend in town who has a 6th sense for knowing about these kinds of sales. In the summer she made many notices about them. Finally made it out to one of the sales with some luck and picked up these cute wind chime shells. You might also start to notice, I like outdoor things indoors.

Next - bicycle. It's my luxury year of cycling. I have cut out road cycling and mountain biking and opted for the luxury line to take out with me along the sunny summer beaches of Vancouver with a sketchbook and art supplies.

Mittens! They're made of cardboard and acrylic paint. Hung on a real life twig that was knocked over during a wind storm last fall. Hung with push pins and string. I had been seeing a lot of mittens, soaked and abandoned, on trees and bushes and benches. The sentiment of someone finding them and picking up a gross looking dirty thing in hopes of someone else finding it again seemed sort of sweet.. Originally I had thought I would paint the twig. But no, I liked it more like that.

And the office chair. It's big and comfy and I'm sitting in it as I write. Well, that's it.. Indoors for me! The lighting comes from both the left and right hand sides through big windows.

I blurred the edges to let the mittens stand out. And played a little with levels, lifting shadows and effecting overall the blue/yellow tint. Brightened the center too. Thought it could use just a subtle touch of that.

Exactly Repeatable Images

I've been having thoughts recently. After reading books at that photo book sale I mentioned around New Years. One of them is called French Primitive Photography, and talks about the photographers from France ~1850-1865. It's an old Aperture publication.

The idea that keeps reiterating in my mind is that their naiveté was something special to photography at that time, as it was so new to people. There was not really a distinction between amateur and professional.

That there was no syntax for their communication through photographs. That these "primitive" photographs are exactly repeatable.

One reason it keeps repeating in my head, I think, is because reading about them I found myself identifying with some aspects of that incredibly closely. It was actually of comfort to read about them... Except, what does it mean that I am "primitive" in 2015!?

These photos were from tonight. I had a whim to try out low key images. My primitive brain said GO! DO IT! And so I listened.. It was fun. I'm happy with what I found.

I like the 3rd one as the glow adds mystery to the shadows. My view of the primitive in your series

Great, creative series, Lea! I like the abstract and surreal feeling of the first picture, and I like the low-key nature that's just a little different than usual.

Stow Lake Moment

Lumix G5, Nikkor-H 50mm f2.0

I love the image "signature" of this lens, especially for B&W images.

Has anyone else paid attention to your lens signature? :)

Dan, for some reason, when you create a post on Blogger, I don't get a notification email. So I didn't know about your last few posts until I came onto the blog to upload my post.

Sorry for the delay, but I will comment on your excellent images very soon.

I forgot to mention that this lens, the Nikkor-H 50mm is from the 1960s. It was first introduced by Nikon in 1963. I got my copy of this lens for free (!) a couple of years ago. I couldn't believe my luck. The filter ring has a huge dent in it, but the glass is in excellent condition and everything else functions well. For this picture, I used it adapted to my Lunix G5.

Trinidad Bay

Here is one for a discussion.  HDR, not a big fan as I have posted before, but in this case what do you think?  This is an image composed of 6 captures, producing 2 HDR images and then combined into a pano.  Nikon d800e, 70-200mm f2.8.

It's a very nice composition, regardless of how it was made. I think your HDR processing was very nicely done, not over the top, like most HDR images that we usually see. It worked for me! :)

I think the "HDR we see" might just be the ones that are over the top. Many like this would go undetected. I think it's a great image. I really like the softness of the darks, especially in the big rock.

? Chocolates .

Posting this for the January monthly project, for things in your personal home spaces. I received a Christmas gift from my sister and her daughter: chocolate monopoly. Aside from two other specific uses, I thought they could triple up by also being a sketching subject. And now a fourth by being part of the blog post. How's that for efficiency. Mm-mmm guud.

I joined the Vancouver Urban Sketchers last January and it has been an absolute blast. And I have been working at an arts supplies store as of last summer, which is where I picked up these Graphitint pencils to experiment with (they are water-soluble, hence the paint brush + waterproof pens).

A confluence of 2014 experience for me there on the table.

Happy New Year to you all. I hope to see some of your monthly project posts these coming weeks!
