California Central Coast

Hi Everyone, I spent last weekend on California's Central Coast.  I tried out my recently repaired Seagull Dual Lens Reflex camera.  Plenty of interesting landscapes between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz.

White Mountains

For those of you not familiar with this alien landscape, it is east of the So. Sierra Nevada, northwest of Death Valley.  The images are taken from the Bristlecone Pine forest at nearly 12,000 feet. These trees are the oldest living things on earth, averaging over a 1,000 years old with one tree reported to be nearly 4,000 years old.  The climate is so harsh and dry if you throw an apple core on the ground it will still be visible in 5 years.  As the area's name confers, the soil is made of dolomite and it is nearly white in places.  Nikon d800e, Zeiss 100 Makro.

Beautiful landscape scenery at Death Valley. I like the white sand scene...it has different feeling when you stand up to look far from....I visited there January last year. the view is amazing, but the weather was little bite hot to me, beacause I like cool weather, otherwise it is perfect view at there. very nice photos shot.

Wow so cool!! The trees in the 1st and 3rd look like they're made of copper. Are clouds rare to see there? The clouds and sand seem to be one and the same in the 2nd shot.. like maybe the wind has blown the sand away into clouds :)

Thanx Lena and Lea, actually the area is about 100 miles northwest of Death Valley, but is one of the mountain ranges that created Death Valley. The soils are all rock, no sand, it is called dolomite and it is really harsh. Many people in the 1960s used the rock to place in their yards as decoration. The sky is as blue as I have ever seen, and clouds seem to be a bit of a rare. Dan

I notice that all the guys on the media boat are wearing the same brand and style of slr harness, and they are all hand holding those humongous rigs, so I would expect them to be shooting high-ISO and high-shutter speeds, and giving their lens stabilization systems (and their arms) some exercise :).

Faces

Warren took the first photos after showing me how to load film into a camera... which I am yet to test of myself. Soon!

The second, was shot by me. And I was focused on how to USE the camera, not noticing that brain-zapping light shining into the middle of your skull! :O

Well, I just wanted to say thanks again for the great day and and borrowing me a camera to learn from!

The Boats

The first one is after the finish line, the second is the first corner of the race, and the third is the capsized Oracle boat. I was surprised to see that they were dangling there from it!

I liked the experience of shooting film. I hesitated more often about clicking since there are only 24 shots .. and I have tried to think this way while shooting before (on digital) but it's really just not the same impact as physically running out of room. So I enjoyed that as an exercise for being a little more critical in the moment.
I look forward to more film shooting!

Lea, these are great shots, especially for your first roll of film :). I'm glad you enjoyed the experience. For me, going from film to digital, my "shot discipline" carried over to my digital shooting. I cringe when I hear someone next to me shooting a dslr in continuous mode, a.k.a. "spray and pray" mode even if it's a static subject. Post some more film shots!

Warren asked if I caught a 'Pitch Pole' capsize in the Americas Cup race Warren, Gail, Lea, and Tyler attended recently.  The first image is just before the Oracle boat rounded the yellow marker boat and capsized.   Although, the capsizing occurred quite a ways off shore, the following is what I was able to capture, using the Nikon d800e, with the Nikon 400 f2.8 and a TC 1.4ii. No one was hurt and after they righted the boat the crew went on to win another race later in the day.

Final Fly-by

#7 is a two-seater. I wonder how one gets selected to ride in the airshow every year. :) I've photographed #7 many times through the years.

I found the answer in the Blue Angels' FAQ online:

What are the policies / requirements governing back seat flights in the number 7 jet?
