Green Street Flowers

Shot these while walking on Telegraph Hill with Steve R. last Saturday. These flowers were in a planter next to Green Street, just down the hill from where we saw the wild parrots.

Great photo, Warren! The color is superb, and I really like the backlighting that brings out the fine hairs on the stems.

Thanks Steve, I did notice the backlighting first when I saw these flowers.

Steve and Warren in Action

Here's Steve in action ready to shoot...shoot...a white building with a gull on the top. I saw the shot, Steve. Nice one.

I find it interesting and a little bit weird to see myself in pictures, especially like this one where I see myself at an angle that I don't normally see. I'm thinking: "so that's what I look like, hmmmm."

Warren - I must say, you look pretty cool in this photo - reminds me a little of Charles Bronson in his younger days - you didn't have a .38 Special in your pocket, did you? ;-)

Here is a photo of the Marx Bros shortly after coffee and walking around the Fisherman's Wharf area.

Ohhhhh Lydia, oh Lydia an encyclopedia...

Steve, it was a great day walking around, chatting, and taking pix. Wow, more friends back East, more people I have to visit there, more fun!

What A Day!

It's now about 2AM PDT, and I have to get up at 7 to catch a plane, but I just wanted to quickly post photos from yesterday and say a few words.

First of all, my sincere thanks to Warren for organizing the First Transcontinental Meetup of FPCP. He did an outstanding job, making sure there was a Chinese funeral procession, plenty of wild parrots on Telegraph Hill and sea lions down by the piers, and introducing me to Dim Sum.

As you can see, I took lots of photos of this wonderful and photogenic city. But by far, the best thing was meeting Warren, Martin and Eric. It was like a dream come true.

I hope that I can come back soon and do this again!

By the way, Martin, I hope this doesn't sound too weird, but I really enjoy watching you handle a camera (that D50 and manual focus/manual exposure Nikon Series E zoom). You are so familiar with it. Who needs auto anything anyway!

I don't remember what the other lens was that you were using.

The other lens I was using is the Nikon 18-55mm zoom lens that came with the D50. The lens easy to carry in a jacket pocket and not very expensive. I've tried more than ten different lenses on the D50 and the 75-150mm series E and the 18-55mm are the easiest to carry. The other lens I use often is the 70-210mm AF Nikkor zoom.

I think it would be very interesting to use a D40/D40x with old non-ai Nikkor lenses. This is what TedM has been doing a lot of lately.

I've used a few non-AI Nikkors on the D50. They will work with a little modification: the back of the aperture ring needs to be filed down. One of the sharper lenses to use is the 105mm. On the D50 and D40s the meter will not work so you need to do a test exposure.

Yeah, I'm used to having no metering on the D100 when using my ai/ais lenses on it. I do test exposures and use the histogram and blinking highlights displays to determine exposure.

In fact, I bought a 105mm ai specifically to use with the D100 because I didn't want to modify my non-ai 105mm Nikkor.

Beautiful Spring Day

Nikon D100, Tamron 24-135mm

It was a beautiful, hot, sunny spring day last Sunday in San Francisco. This picture will remind me of my pleasant walk at Land's End Trail that day.

It was hot on the trail, but I found a clearing and sat amidst the trees for a while, and enjoyed the coolness of the shade and the mild sea breeze.

Uncle Sam

I saw "Uncle Sam" while attending the Tax Day Tea Party in Baltimore today. Ultra-soggy weather notwithstanding, the turnout was decent.

I took this one with my beat-up, carry-everywhere-in-my-pocket 5MP Canon SD400. The moon must have been in the Seventh House and Jupiter must have been aligned with Mars, because this is one sharp image. The difference between it and almost every other exposure I made today is amazing.

Gail and Genie at Stow Lake, Circa Late-1980's

Hasselblad 500CM, 80mm Planar, Kodak Pro Film

We were cleaning out some things and Gail came across an old photo that I took of Gail and her sister, Genie, at Stow Lake. I was practicing my outdoor portrait techniques with the Hassy.

This is a scan of a badly faded picture, and I did some very minor color correction on Photoshop after the scan. Even with a scan of an ancient picture, the quality of medium format and the Zeiss glass is still apparent, IMO.

View From Row 13

View From Row 13What to do while waiting on the apron of the airport? Why, take photos out the window, of course.

This was on a flight back from Norfolk to Baltimore. At first, there didn't seem to be any "there", there, but after a while, I got to playing with the angles formed by the wing and nacelle, the luggage loader and the cart behind it.

By the way, we sat there for about two hours; the flight crew spotted a potential wing flap problem as we were almost ready to taxi to the runway. Southwest called in a mechanic, but the problem wasn't fixable on the spot, so we rolled back to the gate and deplaned. With a new part beign flown in, they were estimating that the plane would be fixed and depart in about three hours. We decided to punt and rented a car - it was a pleasant afternoon and an easy ride back.

Good eye, Steve! This looks like an advertisement for the luggage loader. I like the coordinated colors and positioning of all the elements in the photo (Z pattern). This looks professionally staged.
