Bird at Bodega Bay

Nikon D100, Tamron 24-135mm

Has anyone seen the Alfred Hitchcock movie, "The Birds"? As you may know, it was set in the town of Bodega Bay. Here is one of its resident birds. He was not scared when I walked right up to within a few feet of him.

By the way, the folks at Rangefinderforum.com have another great idea. They also feature a monthly theme, like we did. Their rule is that you must submit your single best picture that represents the theme, and then the person who was picked for last month's favorite gets to choose his favorite entry for the current month. The new winner gets to set the theme for next month, and so on. How does that sound? It only works if more than two people participate, otherwise it's kind of pointless :). We can revive our monthly theme using this format, if enough people are interested. Alternatively, we can just take turns setting the monthly team without the competition aspect. Any thoughts on this? Or should we just keep it on the shelf for now?

I think it's a great idea! .. I'm not sure how good I will be at it... but it will be a chance improve on a different aspect of photography. And I am finding that in life, we all strive to better ourselves in one way or another. So I think this is a nice idea for the forum.

It's a popular concept -- theme photography -- and I believe there is a reason. It kind of ties back to part of that monster discussion we had a week ago -- a professional will be able to capture the essense of a scene in a feasible manner. We want to find a picture with that undefinable greatness. That je ne sais quoi.

For some project management pointers:

We would be using our "fun-time" for this theming project, so getting a shot in a feasible manner would mean not taking it all of it up or making it unfun-time by taking it too seriously either.

In regards to submissions, a month is a good time frame to use. I know some sites use weekly themes but I think we do not have enough people here to support that kind of turnaround (increasing the likelihood of funtime becoming unfun time ... and ultimately, failure of the project... which we all don't want of course!).

Another thing -- when during that month do we submit. I think it's best to allot a time frame, maybe a week, for submissions to come in... so we can see all the pics together and the same time... this will decrease the chances of a shot being chosen due to "newness"... if that can even occur, heheh.. Time Bias.. systematic differences of opinions... hmmm

I know I've blabbed a bunch now but I hope something in there helps a bit. I'm up for the theming project if other people are too :)

Hi Lea,

I very much appreciate your thoughts on this, and your enthusiasm too!

Let's wait to see what the others have to say about this.

Meanwhile, everyone should just keep on doing what we've been doing. It's been great!

Lea,

It seems that everyone is laying low about this idea. Maybe we can revisit it at some other time.

Meanwhile, if you have idea on a project, please free to toss it out and see if anyone is interested in joining you.

Ok, that's cool. What you've got at the forum now is pretty cool anyways :) I enjoy sharing pics and seeing everyone else's photographs too.

But for something that's a little more lax we could do a thing like the best of the best, and show some of the great photographs everyone at the forum's had!

... something for an off day, it might take a while hehehe :)
