Parrot Cornered

I cornered this parrot on Telegraph Hill today. The flock that I found was friendly and actually posed for photos. Flash fill was used on this frame.

Crikey! He's a beauty!

This is really excellent, Martin. Beautiful detail in the delicate feathers and great separation from the background. I'm really glad you're back in action!

Best regards,
SteveR

Nice picture, Martin! Gail will be jealous. We went to look for the parrots twice but missed them both times. Where did you find them this time, and what time of the day was it?

I found this flock on the east side of Telegraph Hill. Go to Union and Montgomery and walk east past Calhoun and down the dead end steps. The other spot for the parrots are the Filbert steps which are one block north. Best time of day is afternoon at 3pm or so.

While at Fisherman's Wharf with Steve, Warren and Martin, I got a shot of these signs.

Thanks. Ever since the China trip, I've noticed colors more and try to get pix where they pop out - if I can.

Gull at Pier 39

Nikon D100, Nikkor 300mm f4.5

My obligatory seagull shot :). The day after Steve R. visited us, Gail and I went for a long walk to almost the same places. I brought my 300mm in case we ran into the wild parrots again. We didn't see the parrots, but I used the lens on the more accessible animals at Pier 39 (gulls and sea lions).

A first-class photo, Warren! Your use of the long telephoto simplified the background and created quite beautiful negative spaces.

wow - so white it looks like it could be made of snow and ice! The crisp focus adds to the chilly chiseled look.

DoF exercise with Lucky

I'm back from the dead! Sorry, I haven't really participated in the forum in about a year of so. I just have not been taking a whole lot of pictures lately, at least none I thought worthy of sharing. But partly due to my busy schedule also. Just a quick one here to hopefully get me back in the group. Our dog Lucky was sitting in the sun with interesting light so I put on my 50mm 1.8 on the NIkon D70 in a DoF exercise.

Hi Benson, welcome back! We missed you! Nice shot of lucky, many gearheads would often knock the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 as having unpleasant bokeh, but I think it's very nice under certain shooting conditions (such as this one).

8-Ball

Another artifact I pass every day, less than a half-block from the door to where I work. I just noticed the nice arc and the "8-Ball" for the first time two days ago.

Photographers at Work

Nikon D100, Tokina 17mm f3.5 ATX-Pro

Some behind the scene coverage of the reportage action. I wonder how many frames were shot at this scene by Martin and Steve (only this one by me).

Talk about an action photo! You caught us at just the right moment - looking like vultures sweeping in for the prey! ;-)

I just checked - I shot four images - none of them really any good :-(

Martin's photo was quite good, I thought.

Marching Band

This was from the day in SF with Steve. Funeral band playing on Stockton Street.

Ah, a great photo, Martin - you captured this at just the right moment to get a good composition - the "layered" trumpet players - and a nice, clean background.

How about that Warren- going to the trouble to arrange for a traditional SF Chinese funeral procession during my visit!
