Fuzzi about SCSI
Hi Gang,
So I thought I was being clever when I bought an Adaptec USB to SCSI adapter cable. I am trying to make it work with my old Nikon Coolscan III (LS-30). The scanner is an older, SCSI only device. I have not had time to fuss with it until just last night, because I recently got two rolls of Tri-X processed with contact sheets only. I'm anxious to digitize some images to share with everyone.
Aaargh!!! My new PC w/Windows XP Home edition (SP2) is not recognizing the devices. I need to do a lot more research/downloads/deinstalling/re-installing, etc.... Yech!
What ever happened to plug and play? It's more like plug and PRAY.
Anyway, just venting here because I'm anxious to get on with it, but it's clear that my scanner might be offline for a little while longer. My next attempt will be to pull the old SCSI card from the Windows 98SE machine to try on the new PC. If that doesn't work, I may need to buy a more compatible Adaptec SCSI controller.
I have some nice B&W images from my Voigtlander Bessa R that I wanted to post-process and post to the forum.
Pictured: This is a picture of my Fed 2, vintage FSU (Former Soviet Union) camera. I'm getting the itch to load it up this weekend for some fun shooting. It's all manual, rangefinder focus, no-meter, and LOTS of fun to shoot! It's the perfect Luddite counterpoint to the high tech mess that I'm dealing with on my computer :).
Later,
Warren

Oh, no, Warren! Us Windows guys should never air our dirty laundry in public - now all the Mac guys will chime in, "ya shoulda bought a Mac!" ;-)
Looking forward to your FED-2 photos! I haven't used any of my FSU cameras in almost 2 years. I need to put a day on my calendar to go out with just an FSU camera and some film - at least once a year. Maybe Sat Apr 29 or Sun Apr 30 this year (i.e., in celebration of May Day!)
I have not used my FSU cameras since I got my VC Bessa R. Which FSU cameras do you have? I have 2 Fed 2's, and a Zorki-4. The Fed 2 that is pictured is my most reliable one. I think the 2 other bodies need a good CLA. For lenses, I have two Industar26M, and that lovely Jupiter-8.
I'm thinking of shooting some color print film in the Fed this time so that at least I can use the flatbed scanner to digitize the images if necessary.

Plug and play is a Mac thing. You need an Adaptec 2906 SCSI card, which can be found on ebay for about $10.
I got a refurbished Epson 3170 scanner this week. Works pretty well, still testing it out. The software is a bit funky. I had to get something as I started to shoot medium format again and had to get a cheap scanner. Costs under $100 online from Epson with free shipping.
Martin, I can't wait to see your latest medium format work. What are you shooting, Rollei or Hassy?
yeah, i read about the adaptec 2906, i'll probably be getting one.

I bought a fifty year old Rolleicord on the auction site. Amazingly, the camera was in excellent condition. I shot with a borrowed Rolleiflex in high school and this is a retro phase I'm going through. I decided against using a Hasselblad because of the noise and the mirror vibration.
I kept one of my Hasselblads, the 500CM, and I still have a few rolls of expired 120 to shoot someday. I've always wanted a medium format scanner, but they have always been too expensive to justify. The Epson looks very affordable. I'd like to see some results from using it to scan medium format. I had a Yashicamat 124G (great camera) for a while, and last year, I was tempted to pick up another TLR. I was considering a Rolleicord or Rolleflex of some kind. Then I decided to just use my 500CM if I ever had the urge to shoot medium format.
