Magilla Gorilla's Grandfather

Here's a little something that caught my attention at the Harvard Museum of History. Note the bulging eyes. Nope, not an x-ray of me. It's the bone of an ape - I think.

Weird and cool shot, I like how the eye sockets are lit in the back.

Side Note: there seems to be a lot of digital noise in this one too. Perhaps you should examine your digital workflow (process). There may be too much compression going on in the process. Every time you save the image in .jpg, the process of jpeg compression degrades the image.

I know what you mean. I scanned this in from a negative and I think I tried sharpening it too much. I also tried burning in the top of the skull too much. Is this what you are referring to?

hi, not exactly, I was referring to the digital noise/artifacts that are visible in the lower part of the shot. You can see one right next to the rightmost rib on the right side. Also, the gray empty space between the arms and legs below the skull is not as smooth as it should be.

Could be the scanner. What is the scan resolution? I think a dedicated negative and slide scanner like Warren has would make a better scan. Maybe bring the negative over to Warren's house and compare scan qualities. That would be interesting to see.

It may not be the scanner because the Gray Flamingo shot was also scanned, and that one is ultra-smooth. I was very impressed by the 35mm scan quality of the Epson 4490, even though my dedicated Nikon scanner may still have a slight edge in quality. I would be willing to give up a little 35mm scan quality in order to gain the ability to scan medium format like the 4490 does.

I think I mucked around with the photo too much. Also, I remember when taking it, the conditions in the museum were not that good. The original photo was a bit underexposed.
