The Sentinel

Lumix G5, Lumix 20mm f1.7

I saw this scene while we were exploring Funchal, Madiera Island, Portugal. As I processed the picture today, I still remember clearly how I envisioned this scene when I originally snapped the shutter. This is the resulting B&W image that originated in my mind over six months ago. :)

When I have time, and I don't know when that will be :), I will probably set up a gallery of all my favorite shots from that trip.

--Warren

p.s. Just to see who is actually reading this, does anyone have any ideas for a Februrary project? I must say that if your idea is used, you should be morally obligated to post at least one image for the project! January was pretty wimpy for Monthly Project participation, unfortunately.

The dog adds just the right touch of life and character to an already enjoyable scene. I have a post for Jan in mind.. It's coming, it's still January! I'm a little scatter-brained this month, so whatever people choose, I will shoot for it too! My last suggestion turned out a little crazy so I don't know that you want it to come from me anyways ;)

The Fountain of Youth

Lumix G5, Lumix 14-45mm

Over the couple of months, I will, from time to time, post pictures that were taken on our last trip to Europe. I am going over my catalog of images before I clear then from my travel laptop.

This shot was taken in Valencia, Spain. These kids were on a field trip to see the old-town area of Valencia, I believe. We also did a day trip into Valencia from Castillon where our hotel was.

Abbey at Ocean Beach -- Strangers Project

Nikon D200, Nikkor 35mm f2.0 AI

This is my first contribution to our Strangers Project. Meet Abbey from Washington D.C. She moved to San Francisco about 6 months ago, and works at Stanford (Palo Alto). She was enjoying a book while stretched out on the seawall at Ocean Beach. It was near sunset and the light was nice and warm, I liked her orange outfit which was a nice contrast to the rather neutral tones at the beach, so I introduced myself ask her if I could take her picture. She graciously agreed, and this is the result. I only took these two shots, but they both turned out well, IMO. :)

Thanks Abbey!

Do you mean the bulb nose and squinty eyes. It is also interesting to see the lines making the face of a shark with it's mouth open.....eating the wood.

Out of the Ordinary

electric meter BGE

Hi everyone! I haven't posted for a while, so when I edited this photo just now, I decided to post it here first, rather than to Facebook, Flickr, or my blog.

Over the years, I've found that good, compelling images are everywhere. Our job as photographers is to isolate the interesting parts and exclude everything else. Easier said than done, but that's what I aim for... and maybe 5% of the time, if I'm very lucky, I make a decent image.

Today, I needed new tires and a bunch of other work for my 2004 Hyundai Elantra, and went to my trusted auto mechanics, which happens to also be a Goodyear franchise. They said I'd be their guest for a while, so I walked a block to a nearby Chick-fil-A for lunch and some reading. On my way back to the shop, I noticed this nice repeating pattern of electric meters mounted over a Goodyear yellow-and-blue paint scheme. The building itself is, frankly, pretty ugly, but I thought I could isolate these elements for a decent composition.

I didn't have even my little Canon S95 with me, but I did have my cell phone, which I used to make some snaps of the trio and the snazzy paint scheme.

So a little cropping and curve adjustment in Photoshop CC and a nice "mat" and "frame" added in Picasa resulted in what you see here.

I hope I succeeded in making something interesting "out of the ordinary."

SUPERHERO SCRAMBLE 2014 # Strangers Project

Got a call from Muscle Milk through my girlfriends friend that they needed a photographer for the Superhero Scramble. After some lunch and AC, I am headed back out for round two. I have already been approached by several other companies to do some photos for them. Having a blast feeling how out of shape I am. =)

Ringing in the New Year # Strangers Project

Maggie from Toronto

Ricardo's family & Friends

I hope to see them again.

Hugo - From Miami

Anthony or Elvis depending on when you talk to him.

I had my camera in a bag in my buddies hotel room collecting dust  because carrying my Nikon D7000 and an SB700 flash. Taking photos of strangers on New Years was better as a great thought then actually getting the guts to follow through. But after running to the oversized Christmas tree 7 times to take photos of people with their own phones because they couldn't get their significant others in the frame and then getting ditched at 11:30 by my buddy, sparked me to grab my camera and strap up for humility and a little one on one. What I found were amazing subjects, gracious hosts and possibly a couple new friends. One step into street photography and no regrets.

Edited in Lightroom

Thanks Warren!

I am really hoping to start running with an open heart when photographing strangers. I completely understand why someone would be intrigued in getting a camera you look down into instead of directly at your subject. My DSLR feels like I am aiming a missile turret at someones face.... It also doesn't make it simple to strike up a conversation when they are looking at your camera in fright before getting to know you. Wow... What a perspective changer.

Comparisons at the Museum

I have been enjoying touring Museums lately, with the idea of comparing various forms of art via photography.  This latest series is from the standing collection at the Legion of Honor, and with the exception of the knight's armor and the tapestry, I tried to contrast sculptures with paintings.  Fun for me at least.  Leica M240, 50mm Noctilux.

Very cool! Re-phrasing the contemplative inspirations. The reflections in the 2nd one are great! Surrounded by a repetitive thought. And the 3rd one really induces an animalistic feeling on the framed art in the background. Holding on to thought in the 4th. She is cupped in the mind of another. How sweet! Kinship of heads in the 6th. 3D is now 2D, like the others. But it still feels different.
