Hi Warren, well paying off Kent probably helps ;) (just KIDDING!), but seriously, when Kent decided to only allow 200 pixels or whatever, I knew I was out. And with all due respect to everyone here, and those who played, I seriously doubt that HCB, or any serious photographer would enter a contest where you had to judge by re-sizing already mega compressed images to thumbnail sizes. Sorry for the Friday rant ;)

Friday, January 25, 2013 at 9:33:00 AM PST
Blogger Warren T. said...

Well, Kent's restrictions were: 1200 pixels on the long side, and max 300k file size which is hardly a thumbnail size. I understand that it may be thumbnail sized to you though. In my opinion, this is certainly large enough to be able to judge online, these characteristics: subject, composition, lighting, exposure, and other subjective things such as message, feeling, vision, etc.

Sorry Ted, I but do believe that everyone who entered this contest was a serious photographer at least in their own minds. What you consider serious is of course, subjective though, and may differ.

Thank you Lena for the comment on Slate resting under the chair.

Warren, the images on my screens on rff and Kent's site are about 2 inches square, the rectangular ones maybe 3 inches by 2 inches. This is at the devices native resolutions, and the browser's native scaling.

When I enlarge them in the browser, to about 3x, they are pixelated, and the emotions that should accompany the images are not there for me. The mind is fooled, but the heart is not.

There are some basic technical reasons why most photo competitions or requests for images, require larger files, and I can explain this to you over coffee or a beer sometime. Thanks, and I apologize. I did not mean to offend anyone here, or those who participated in any contest, but I do feel strongly that small images lose quite a bit. And that's is why I not only didn't submit anything (in addition, I haven't developed my film images from that day yet), but I didn't judge any either, as they are simply too small and too compressed for me to comprehend.

Friday, January 25, 2013 at 7:02:00 PM PST

NEW NIKON 50MM 1.4D AF LENS TESTING GROUND

 BAJA LIGHT BULB BOKEH

DOWNTOWN BOCA WINDOW PANE REFLECTION STAIN

 ITALIAN TREE LIGHTS

ALL YOU NEED IS A CHAIR

RAIN FOR THE THIRSTY

CRAB SPIDER BOKEH

BEES WORK ON SUNDAY

I received my 50MM 1.4D AF lens on Friday. These are just a few of my favorites from the past two days. I am really enjoying learning with this lens. Funny how much this lens taught me about my other two lenses.

I would like to start a Blog or site where I can post pics that Google and Face Crook cant steal and everything stays mine so I can post freely. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start?

I look at every ones photos during the week and love to see new ones. I need to figure out an easy way to comment from my phone or I-Pad. Does anyone have suggestions for phone adaptability. Apple doesn't play well with Google or others for that matter.

I like the night lighting in the two tree shots. Makes for an interesting mystery mood...

I use flickr to post, where you can set different levels of ownership per photo. With Google+ I think the photogs are taking out copyrights on their pics before putting them up there. Neither are free from theft... as is anything seen on the internet, but if you would like to legally carry the copyright then those are safe to use I think.

Monday, January 21, 2013 at 6:10:00 PM PST
Blogger Warren T. said...

I also like the two nighttime tree shots, interesting lighting, color, and compositions.

The Nikkor 50mm is a great lens. I have 3 manual focus versions of that lens. Can't wait to see more of your shots from that lens.

What Lea said... it's very hard to protect your images from theft if you publish them on the Internet. You can take precautions, like watermarking your files and not publishing full-resolution images in your galleries, but there are widely known methods of defeating almost anything.

For my 'viewfindersf.com' site, I use Lightroom and WSPP (a LR plug-in) to create and maintain the site. But before you can do that, you need to have your own domain.

There are many people who view and comment here who are using Apple computers/tablets/iPhones. What problems are you having when you try to read and/or comment using Apple gear?

Boffo in Bowie...

So much for my attempt to write headlines in the style of Variety!

One of my photos is now showing at a juried art exhibit sponsored by Bowie Arts Committee at Bowie City Hall, 15901 Excalibur Road.

The theme of this exhibit, which runs until March 16, 2013, is "Abstracts"  (so all you Californians, hurry up and fly over here to see it! ;-)  Entries the judges accepted include photographs, painting, mixed media, and small sculptures.

I submitted two photos, and the judges chose my "Green Spiral Benches" (center framed item in the photo here) for the exhibit.

You can see a larger rendition of the image here

Thanks to Warren for reminding me to post this on FPCF!
