I like it a lot Lea. When enlarged, the colors, and details of the water droplets and the leaf's knife-like edges really make it interesting. YAY!

Cameras and Coffee

(Ted contemplating which camera to try next)

(Warren with coffee and camera)

Olympus D-600L

Ted and I spent an nice couple of hours at a local Starbucks to meet up and talk about cameras and other important things in life :).

I was very fortunate to receive a HUGE assortment of camera gear today from a very generous person who wanted to give his unused, older photography gear away to someone who would use it. The pictures above were taken with one of these cameras, the Olympus D-600L. It still had good batteries in it when Ted switched it on for the first time today. To our pleasure, it still worked! The D-600L is a 1.3MP, fixed lens, slr-style camera from the early days of digital. The optics are superb, as you would expect from Olympus. The camera originally retailed for $1300 (!!!). This camera reminds me of my first digicam, the Sony D770, but this Olympus lacks full manual photographic controls that the Sony had.

When I get around to it, I'll show you more from this set of photo gear. Meanwhile, I'll post a few test shots that I took today with the Olympus.

My Photos Are In the Toilet!

Last month, we already established that most of my photos suck. And now, it seems, some of my photos are in the toilet!

Actually, I walked into our powder room last Sunday monring as light was squeezing through almost-closed blinds. The light made an interesting pattern on the toilet; I especially liked the multiple ways the alternating bands of shadow and light curved.

So natch, I grabbed my Canon XSi and started snapping some pictures, as my wife once more looked on bemusedly. She's long gotten used to me taking photos of seemingly mundane and unbeautiful things.

No potty-mouthed remarks about this one, please.

Angel Trails

Nikon D100, Tamron 24-135mm
It was another picture perfect, gorgeous day on the Bay. We watched the airshow from Fort Point which is at the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge. I wasn't out to specifically photograph the show, but since I was out to see them anyway, well of course I couldn't help taking a few shots...

Hi Warren, it's Kristy from the cruise! I love this picture. I wish I had some photo taking abilities. I can barely take a decent picture.

Hi Kristy! Thanks for the nice comment. Please take your time and enjoy all the rest of our photos (and also in the archives). Gail and I will be sending out a URL to our cruise pictures very soon. They are mostly by Gail using our digital, but I shot 4 rolls of film that I'm still waiting to get back from the lab.

Regards,

Warren

Anchor Point

Canon A570IS

Hi Everyone,

I'm back from vacation. I ended up taking two compact cameras on our Mexican Riviera cruise, the Canon A570IS, and the Yashica T4. I shot only Tri-X in the T4 and it will be a week before I see the results from that.

On this trip, Gail took the majority of the digital pictures (and she did a great job with it). I managed to wrestle the camera from her a few times for a few shots of my own from the A570IS. This picture is one of the few that I got from it.

It's a picture of one of the incredibly heavy duty anchor points for the awning that stretched over the aft deck where there were tables for outdoor dining.

Be sure to also check my personal blog once in a while because I'll probably be posting more vacation pictures there.

Arlington National Cemetery Meetup

Our hyperactive Meetup group visited Arlington National Cemetery yesterday, our sixth photo meetup since we got started August 2nd.

I can tell you from my experience over the past two months that if you find yourself in a photo slump, try a nearby photo Meetup.com group - it's worked wonders for me, as I've been photographing nearly nonstop since early August. The energy from being around other enthusiastic photographers carries over between meetups.

I hadn't been to Arlington National Cemetery since 1964, when I was 14 years old. I was moved by the changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns, but not so much by the ceremony itself, as by the many WWII veterans attending. While most people were watching the precise ritual by members of the 3rd US Infantry Regiment, I was fixed on these true American heroes. As young men, they endured countless hardships for our sake, then came back home and quietly and modestly rebuilt their lives as well as the American prosperity of the postwar period. Now at the end of their lives, we are fortunate whenever we find ourselves in their presence.
