Shadow Dancer

Shadow DancerThis little shadow dancer was doing her thing as us adults watched a group of Peruvian musicians performing at Harborplace.

Now that Spring is well along and the days are much longer, there's free entertainment every evening at the little amphitheater, and I like to walk along the Inner Harbor on my way to the Light Rail to check things out. This group of three musicians did a very good job of playing guitar and bamboo flutes (the style is sort of like the flute bridge in El Condor Pasa.) Last Friday, I saw a very good juggler/comedian.

I took the little shadow dancer photo with a Canon A620.

just some observations:

- the girl seems to be floating in the air!
- one would expect to see a shadow of the girl wih her arms outstretched, but all you see are the shadows of the people behind her. This is oddly disturbing because it visually "does not compute" in the mind :). I think the placement of the shadows also contributes to my first observation, the floating feeling.

A very good double-portrait! Wonderful expressions - I can actually see how proud the proud papa is, and his little girl is really beautiful and enjoying posing.

My only suggestion is - I would have loved to see more light on Dad's face and the bright line at bottom eliminated.

As far as the pose and expressions - couldn't do much better than you did.

thanks for the comment and suggestion. That's a good observation. I corrected some unflattering reflections and highlights on Ray's face, and tried lightening it, but the low-res image wouldn't hold up to very much editing, so I left it. When I decide to actually scan the negative, I'll do more work on it to lighten Dad's face. The bright line is from direct sunlight shining through the roof slat of the gazebo that they were under, and I was too lazy to photoshop it out.

It was one of those moments where the priceless expressions would have been lost if I hesitated or fiddled too much before snapping the shutter.

Hmmm, i played with the bad scan a little more and I find that this image is pretty hard to work with. Does someone want to take a stab at lightening/brightening Ray's face? If it turns out well, I would appreciate tips on how to do it. BTW, Ray's complexion is naturally pretty dark to begin with.

Wachovia Tower

Wachovia Tower, Baltimore MDHere's another photo from a long-overdue walkaround during lunch the other day.

The Wachovia Tower sits at Baltimore and St. Paul Streets in downtown baltimore, and it's alternating bands of granite and glass make for a nice reflecting surface. Depending on where you stand, you'll see different buildings reflected. Of course, timing is critical, and the morning, especially early morning is best for a lot of reasons.

I took this particular shot a little after noon, but I'll be heading back to shoot this facade from several angles much earlier in the morning. Stay tuned.

"Tree Orbs"... continued

What happened to our "tree orb" themed posts?

Anyway, does anyone know their trees? What kind are these?

(These were on a tree by the Merced River, Yosemite.)

Actually, I thought they were pineapples when I first saw the pic. Guess this is what you see when you mix a pine tree and an apple tree...a pineapple tree. Huh???

Nice shot, Warren. It reminds me of the old Chinese paintings.

Thanks. The whole weekend was like this, lots of clouds, fog, mist, and drizzle to add atmosphere to the scenery.

Now that I look at this pic again, it seems a little dark. I should have adjusted the tone of the granite of El Capitan just a bit, I think. Oh well...

Thanks Steve.

I found it interesting that I was holding the Sony P&S like the guy in this picture, and it was very easy to pick up abstractions (like the window reflection) when viewing the frame as a whole.

Disney World

Sorry for the lack of postings. I had a few minutes today so wanted to share some pictures from our Orlando trip in February. This one our daughter and a friend were playing with their light spinners at night.

This one is of Main Street at night in Magic Kingdom.

Lastly, this is Cinderella's castle during the evening fireworks show. All photos taken with Nikon D70 with Nikon 18-200mm VR.

Cool shots, Benson. I esp like the castle photo. Looks like something out of a sci-fi/fantasy novel.

Salmon from Lake Cour D'Alene, ID

Many years ago I went fishing with a buddy in the middle of Dec. on this lake. It was snowing, and we had a guide, and at one spot were picking up ~10lb Salmon from about 100 feet down, and releasing them. This one, we released, but it didn't look too healthy the way it was hooked.

The photo was most likely taken with a Chinon SLR with 50/1.9 lens. I recently found the walmart processed negatives and scanned them with an Epson V100 scanner that I recently picked up refurbished for $39.00.

Dragon

Nikon D100, Tamron 24-135mm

Hey folks, what's everyone up to?

I've been a bit busy myself. Here's a photo of our goddaughter's dog, Dragon. He's just so irresistably cute that I had to post a picture of him here. :)

I have one finished roll of XP2 that is waiting to get processed, and a couple of other rolls of XP2 in two different film cameras that I haven't finished yet. That's what happens when shooting film, no instant access to the shots.
